Hey Fastlaners,

I want to share a story that’s equal parts cringe and growth. It’s about how I turned a $2k/week college hustle into a failed startup—and how that failure taught me the importance of scaling right.

10+ years ago, when I was in college I stumbled into a textbook flipping hustle. I’d buy textbooks for around $20 each and resell them online for $100+. By Junior year, I was pulling in $2k/week. It was easy money, but more importantly, it proved the concept worked.

Then I graduated, and my ego took the wheel. I thought, “If I can make this much manually, why not build an app and scale this thing nationwide?”

Spoiler alert: I crashed and burned. Hard.

The Mistakes I Made:

  1. I abandoned a proven hustle to chase “scale” before I had a solid foundation.
  2. I hired developers too early, blowing cash on an app before validating demand.
  3. I tried to launch at multiple colleges at once instead of dominating one market first.
  4. I burned through savings trying to look like a “real company” instead of staying lean and profitable.
  5. I lost a chunk of my parents’ money (still feel like shit about this).
The app failed. The team fell apart. For two years, I blamed everyone else—the developers, the market, the timing. Everything except myself.

But here’s the lesson I learned the hard way: Businesses are like babies. You can’t force them to run before they crawl.

That failure led me to develop the BAAB (Business as a Baby) framework, which helps entrepreneurs understand their business’s true developmental stage before scaling. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Baby Stage: Your business is fragile and needs constant attention. Focus on survival, validating your idea, and finding product-market fit.
  • Toddler Stage: You’ve got some traction, but you’re still unsteady. Focus on building repeatable processes and a loyal customer base.
  • Teenager Stage: Your business is growing fast but might be awkward and unpredictable. Focus on scaling systems and managing growth pains.
  • Adult Stage: Your business is mature and stable. Focus on optimization, innovation, and long-term sustainability.
The problem? I tried to force my “baby” business into the “teenager” stage overnight. And it backfired.

Today, I run TheChumEffect, where we offer staffing, software development, and branding—but with a focus on helping businesses grow at the right pace using the BAAB framework.

I’ve detailed this journey and the BAAB framework in my book, “Business as a Baby” . It’s a no-BS guide to avoiding the mistakes I made and building a business that scales sustainably.

Why This Matters for Fastlaners:
If you’re grinding to build something scalable, I get it. The allure of “bigger, faster, now” is real. But my story is a reminder: scaling too soon can kill a business that might’ve thrived with patience and focus.

So, where’s your business at right now? Is it a baby, toddler, teenager, or adult? And are you scaling at the right pace? Let’s talk.
