This will be a thread where I document my journey building an online business, selling digital products. I’m starting at zero, and will give this an honest try until the end of the year. If I got 0 sales or close to it after that, then I’ll scratch this one and move on. If the sales are flowing in, then I’ll continue.
The product
A digital product in the marketing niche, which saves the customer a lot of time. Selling it for 30$.
Growing the business
Doing both paid ads and social. I don’t got a ton of money to spend on paid ads at the moment so I will have to dedicate more time to growing IG and Pinterest and drive traffic back to the site.
Instagram + Pinterest
Building an audience on Instagram and Pinterest. I’ve done some research before and it seems like a lot of my target audience is on these 2 platforms. Haven’t done nearly any Pinterest before so it should be fun to learn that.
The last time I was active on Instagram, the tactic to grow the account was the follow/unfollow. I’m certain that has changed a lot (saw that Instagram has a 200-people cap you can follow each day now).
The strategy with both these platforms will be to lead the audience back to the website, where I will have an email signup ready.
Paid ads
I’m going to be running paid ads during this whole time. On Adwords and Meta. Got a little experience on Adwords and more so on Meta. I will drive traffic to the landing page (product page), and when people exit the site I will have a popup offering a leadmagnet to get some of that traffic on my email list.
Adwords
These are the stats for Google Adwords so far (only spent close to 40$ so far). It’s a traffic campaign and has a CPC around 0.70$/click.

Have had some problems with getting the Adwords pixel to connect properly, but will fix this very soon and get a conversion campaign going.
I got one campaign (optimized for website traffic).
One ad group with phrase match keywords. I was going broad at the start, but with such a small budget I rather get more specific and get more clicks from people ready to buy right now.
Have a negative keyword list for keywords like "free", "example", and basically keywords that indicate people are either just browsing and learning about a subject or want something for free.
Meta
Will set up this campaign today and hopefully get running later today (Meta can be painfully slow with accepting new campaigns sometimes).
Will start with a traffic campaign here as well.
3 Ad sets:
Email list
Just set this up yesterday. I have one popup when people exit the landing page, and one static form on the homepage. My idea is to keep the emails short, and to the point and try to sell in most of them.
Stats
Sales = 0$
Instagram followers = 7
Pinterest followers = 0
Email list subscribers = 0

3 Ad sets:
- Broad. Targeting age and gender.
- Interests. Targeting interests, pages, sites, and well-known people in that niche.
- Retarget & Lookalike. Will retarget people that have visited the website, visited either the Facebook or Instagram page, seen one of the video ads. Then I will also create a Lookalike audience on all these, with a 5-7% targeting.
