I think most of these people that have become successful have had to go through a lot before gaining clarity of an effective path to success.
It takes more than a few books to make you successful. It takes more than a few skills to get you were you need to go.
I've been going through a lot of mindset changes over the past few years and I think I'm finally ready to take my life to the next level.
We spend a lot of time reading books and taking in information that's just not helpful to our business. It's great to read and learn and take in a lot of know how, but at some point you need to stop and ask if it's taking you where you want to go.
These past 2 years or so I've been reducing the amount of information I take in. And just recently I've started only listening to audio books and reading books that have real actionable information and that pertain to my goals.
We waste a lot of time reading books like The Tipping Point and John Maxwell's Leadership books when, in reality, this information does little for us in the long run. Sure books like Purple Cow and Good to Great are fun to read. But that's all it really is, entertainment. You learn just as much reading those books as you do watching TV.
In the end I've found that there are very few books I can look back on and really say, those are the ones that have set me in the right path. MJ's book being one of them, a bit of Brian Tracy's info and very industry specific info like Start small, stay small by Rob Walling. These books are more specific to what I'm doing in life. None of us should be wasting our time on branding books, or social media revolution reads or any of these other best selling fortune 500 reads. Let's face it, none of us are running fortune 500 companies and half of the branding ideas being thrown around will never be accounted for real dollars in the long run.
This is what I've done lately to move myself ahead:
- I'm listing the very few books that have given me real gains and I'm acting on that information.
- Things like: Brian Tracy's 10 Keys to Personal Power, Learn startup attitude, etc.
- I'm working in small measurable steps instead of thinking, "how can I make a million dollars by next year."
- I'm working on a formula for building small successful online products so I can create a portfolio of small $500/mo plus services.
- I deleted my RSS list.
- I use social media very little now.
- I think about time value/ROI on everything I do
So far, things are started to work out for me. I'm in the middle of my next launch at CollabMango - Your projects, synced, organized & in context. and am earning more every month in my web design business. It will be a few years until I can drop work and collect residuals but I'm getting there and I never gave up. Here's my progress in the past 2 years:
2010-2011 - Tried network marketing. Falled on my face. Got a job as a security guard working nights.
2011-2012 - Quit my job and started making a living developing websites.(Went from employed to full self employed) Then, moved to Mexico. Built a number of services that didn't work out that great. But I learned a lot a long the way.
2012-2013 - Learned a wicked amount of things about marketing, design and building really fast services. Charging flat rate instead of hourly developing websites.(another goal accomplished) Starting to outsource work for the first time ever.(new valuable skill) Built my first small successful lean startup market test.
Now - Here I am working on the 3rd launch for a new web product that I have plans to charge for in the near future. I'm also getting somewhat fluent in Spanish living here in Mexico and make some nice coin coding.
I'm not there yet, but my next step will be making my first monthly residuals on an online product and creating more in the future. Also, I'm on track to outsourcing and automating much of my work.
I feel like, this time, I finally have what it takes to get that much closer. I'm almost there, just a little bit more. It's not rocket science but if you can get past the confusion and work hard it comes.
Just needed to share this. Haven't posted anything like this here in a long time. What have you been doing lately to get more clarity in your life?
