I'm out on a training exercise with the military right now. Lots of fun.
Anyways I have some free time so I decided to rewrite my posting that I put under my progression thread. I want to actually explain what happened and what I did that allowed me the amazing opportunity I have now. I feel people here will get far more value from that compared to my previous posting.
I was there less than a month and I'm now a GM and being mentored by very knowledgable and successful people. Hard to believe huh? How did I do it?
I applied for an entry position. But I did things a entry level employee would not do. I provided value to the business. I had ambition, eagerness to learn, business knowledge, industry knowledge, humbleness, gratitude, I'm young, I did what I said I would do, I produced tangible results, I did not ask permission, ect ect. I had qualities that they took a keen interest in.
The main thing is the value that I added. The GM saw potiental in me.
"Yeah OP no F*cking duh that is all common sense"
Obviously. But how many people actually F*cking do it?
During my interview I applied for a entry level position. He was impressed with me during the interview and I actually got a small promotion and a raise. But after the interview I asked this question "Sir, what would it be worth to you if I generated leads for you?" And why did I ask this question? Because I noticed they were having a lead generation issue. I saw a need and I solved it. I also noticed a understaff issue. So I went out and found a good employee for the business. I noticed SEO and web design issues with the website (one reason for the lead generation problem) so I recommended a person who is very skilled with this. Right off the bat I analyzed the business, found the issues, and started to help solve them. How often do you see a entry level employee do that? How often do you see a 7.25/hr mcdonalds cashier do that?
I did nothing amazing. But because none of the other employees gave a F*ck and only wanted a paycheck the little things I did made me look amazing.
I stayed up almost two days straight once finding leads for the business. Making connections. Door knocking. Calling. Getting shot down at some points. I went out and sold all day. Then at night I couldnt sleep because all I thought about was sales and business. So I stayed up all night developing my stategies and techniques. I spent a ton of my own money (far more than I earned from him) helping the business. I worked my a$$ off not expecting anything amazing to happen.
At all times I knew my place and never tried to stray from it. I was humble. No matter how much I know, or think I know about business. I shut the F*ck up when he talked. I listened and I was eager to listen. And after I listened and absorbed the knowledge he gave me, I thanked him.
None of those things were amazing in anyway at all. What was amazing is that I was SOLVING NEEDS and I was not really asking for anything.
Think about that a second...
Lets swap out the GM and say thats a customer instead.
Hot damn what do you see? Finding needs. Solving needs. Providing value. I put his needs above my own and went all out for him (customer service??) And I was NOT trying to be a greedy a**hole. And then what happened? He talked to his partners because of how good a job I did for him (Referral??) Isnt that business? Yes it is. That is F*cking exactly what business is and that is how people become successful.
Was "luck" involved? Sure at some points. But I put myself in a position to get lucky (hmmm..I think this is mentioned in a few books. Maybe even a book most of you may have read??)
I was a daily hard working fisherman working every single hour I was awake trying to catch fish. Eventually I came upon a big a$$ fish. Luck? Or probability?
That is how I am where I am now. I hope someone on these forums can use this post to help themselves some how.
