I think I understand now how Gordon Gekko made money and why he used offshore accounts etc in his trades. Not certain, but I will spill it out here and see what you guys think of it. See if you think I am on the right track here. It has taken me many hours of thinking to get to this point. I have watched "Wallstreet" many, many times, but never really understood how he made those profits. So here we go:
There is a thing called "ramping the market". As I understand it, this means that you take position in a company more or less on current market price levels and then you put an open volume of shares up for sale at a much higher price. You then trade with yourself through an offshore trading account (with a paid name on the Board of Directors if hell hits the fan) and purchase that open volume of shares.
This results in a price increase of the other shares traded on the exchange. Shares you (the position holder) then can sell of quickly.
I think that is what Buddy did together with his lawyer friend with mentorship from Gekko.
I am not certain this is the case, but I just kind of think it was like this.
"Spread it over several accounts and you won't get burned", said Gekko (or something similar).
Why do I bring this up? Not that I would do it myself (even if it is a tempting thing to do) because jail is not tempting at all. I bring it up because it gives me a better insight in how those big players can really juggle you (the smaller shareholder) around like a string doll if they would feel like it.
Give me your view.
