Hey Fastlaners!
I just read on a danish website about an american business called Ybuy.com
As far as it's described in the danish news article, it's a business which lets you try the newest and best gadgets for 30 days. If you don't like to keep the gadget, you simply return it and that's it. If you'd like to keep it, your monthly fee is subtracted from the gadgets cost and you pay the rest and get to keep the gadget. I think it's a brilliant concept. You eliminate all "fear" of buying and you really get the feeling, "why shouldn't I try one of the newest and coolest gadget for xx dollars per month?"
Obviously there's things like, well when the customer returns the gadget after 30 days, what to do if the gadget is really worn, scratched etc? I guess they figured out a smart way to hold the customer responsible for any damages caused to the product etc. In worst case, the business could offer to sell the used item for a special price to other customers?
Also another great thing about the business, I believe, is that you need to "apply" to be able to try the gadgets. Not anyone can get in and try the hottest gadgets, giving it that "cool" exclusive feeling. This is a violation to the commandment of scale, however as first when they're launching I think it's a great idea. As time goes by (and capital goes up), more and more people could be let into the "circle".
Nothing like it has been made in Denmark and I really think it's clever. A new twist on leasing. Get 500 people signed up, offer 10xiPad, the first 10 people to sign up receives the gadget in a couple of days (dropshipped perhaps?). Now hopefully MOST of the sign ups will decide to keep the product yielding profit to the business. However the % of people actually keeping the product and paying for it - I guess that would need some testing. I do have a hard time believing that more than 50% would return the product though. But that's just a feeling.
