Currently I'm working 2 (minimum wage, woot!) jobs in order to save up enough money to move out of the country (to England). It's quite the eye opener seeing the reaction of people when I tell them that I am done with college to pursue a business.
To put a little background info in, I'm 19 and the type of kid that was "smart" but I live up to people standards and only do what is required I don't go above what they want. So really, with school I am at the limit of other people. On my own though I strive for as near perfection as possible. I've figured that college isn't worth the time (and money!) if I am willing to put in more effort on my own. But I digress.
Still being a teen I've told some of my friends of my plan to move to another country and pursue a business. Moving to England is just a place I've always want to live, doesn't influence the business. It's amazing how many of them think it's a great idea and actually many of them tell me they wish they "could" do the same. Almost everyone at this age seems to have the desire (and perhaps partly due to ignorance) to pursue creating their own business.
I've just recently started these two jobs and I'm working with people much older than me, most 40+. When I tell them what I plan to do, I honestly get a deer in the headlights look. Contrary to teenagers that I've told who continue to ask, I get a look as though I am out of my mind. Perhaps I am dreaming too big, but I'd rather fail at reaching something too hard than just do something easy. Surely these people though didn't grow up dreaming of becoming a cashier at a store, or the stock person. To fill in the sterotypes of kids, they probably wanted to be firefighters and astronauts!
Anyways, today at work I was thinking about how there is a point in our lives that if we don't pursue it it's kind of like the dream is gone. While some have priorities like a family and the risk on them might be too great I know that some of the older people I've told don't. I just wonder why people have let it get into their heads that they cannot achieve anything, when such a short time ago they believed they could be anything.
I'll post more later but I thought I'd just get a quick thing out to see what people have to say.
