This is a motivational little short story (kind of) the point is simple, BE your own compass, by founding your own strength, because this is how you will give your mentors the greatist gift.
The brilliance of experiencing hope as a newer businessman sees it again.
"Ask the question, and before you ask me, more times than not, you will already have your answer"
"Never ask me questions you can ask yourself, is there a google search, is there a way to absorb it over time by being around people, if its frustration and a stupid question work through it"
"Try to contact me with good questions and get as much DONE as you can, and I will look over where you are and fire off what is needed in fast succession, you want to get through this process as fast as possible"
I was super fortunate in that I got an amazing mentor. He came out of nowhere basically wanting to trade my time for his. He was really respectful and blew me away with stories of islands and connections and a lifestyle that was just awesome. He told me about how there are "hoarders" and then there are the guys that had the audacity live and die relying on what they can create. He told me about guys that invest for a lot of years, and guys that die with nothing but a bowling alley to their name. He talked about rocking out to music, getting into a zone and talking to some of the most influential people in the world.
I was initially stunned.
Who the hell was this guy?
Turned out he would be a mentor, and an efficient one at that, batting questions off one handed, and ingraining in me some foundations. Foundations about WHY you do biz, WHAT you create, and WHEN to get stuff done.
I felt inadequate, but inspired, and he said "you just need to open your mind", I had a THOUSAND issues regarding money, wagging fingers of family, and bills due, and for years I tried to eradicate that haze from my mind.
Eventually, I stopped asking him questions. Eventually, I knew they were terrible. Eventually I started to act.
I huddled away in my cave for a year building what I could. And everytime I asked a question I found an answer.
I started to want to ask him questions, not out of not having anywhere else to go, but out of greed. Some idea of being as good as he was. Some idea of showing what I learnt, so that I wouldn't feel stupid.
Eventually I learnt to surpass the greed. Eventually I realise, that it was never about being as good as him. But that he was spurring me on to be as good as ME.
Our mentors come in different shapes and sizes, but you have to find the strength, or YOU will be greedy, pointless in your ambitions and a jerk to them.
Instead of telling my mentor what I DO NOW, I aim to SHOW HIM LATER.
I picked up my baggage, I put my game face on, I focus on the business I have like a tiger. Stalking every avenue of uncertainty I can. And expecting no less from myself than my ENTIRE potential.
The mentor can only be thanked by the person that WALKS, never the person that talks.
What they want most of all is for you to "get it" and getting it means "understanding their silence".
In their silence, they are WAITING for the moment they see another person standing there.
Don't waste your greed on taking their value, become what you can be.
NOW
And if you can't, STEAM your way through the opportunities you have got.
Do everything YOU can. Move ON from the fear that you won't be enough.
Step up.
Show us what you are made of, when the time comes, and give us a knowing little smile and a nod. And as mentors, they will know, you made it.
Forget measuring UP, and become the strength you want to see in others.
