Hi all,
After a couple of weeks lurking, reading, and taking notes, I've decided to join the community.
After reading TMF , I've gotta say, my first thought was WTF was I thinking? It feels like my whole life has been a struggle to reprogram what almost 20 years of schooling had brainwashed me to become. Even after starting a career years ago as a scientist doing academic research, I now see myself as no more intelligent than any other time card puncher. Maybe clever, but intelligent? No.
I left that field, unhappy with the lack of freedom I had in choosing a topic of interest. Suffice it to say, there's a lot of politics in research. I realise now that in a way, the slight sense of superiority I had as a researcher made it more difficult to see how wearing a lab coat for a living was just as much of a dead end as any other nine to five job. Like the patient who pays a premium for therapy is convinced it's working, I was inclined to be satisfied because of my "education" and "compensation".
Anyway, I'm here now, better late than never. Hope to have something of value to contribute soon.
