I'm in the middle of reading Fastlane. The descriptions of sidewalkers and slow laners sound very familiar..!
I'm currently doing low-paid gig work, which means I often move back into my mum's house during lean times so I can Airbnb my flat. I’ve just cashed in my Stocks and Shares ISA—some for crypto, the rest for bonds. Last week, out of desperation, I placed a bet on the Oscars.
I've spent the last decade working in media, but for the past nine years, I’ve felt increasingly dissatisfied with the industry and the instability of freelance life. This feeling intensified after I relocated to my hometown just before the pandemic. Since then, shifting market forces—the rise of YouTube, the bursting of the streamer bubble—have completely changed the landscape. Over the past year, I’ve struggled to secure work in my field. In some ways, I’m relieved; it’s forced me to start exploring options in the slow lane. However, having been able to pick and choose my projects for 15 years, as well as running my own business with Airbnb, I like freedom. There's just not enough media work of the kind I'd like to do, and with the collaborators I'd like to work with, for my business to survive.
Now in my 40s, today feels like my limo in the snow moment. I haven’t quite figured out how to turn my situation into a growth opportunity yet—but that’s why I’m here. I’m hoping that by shifting my paradigm, I’ll find a way to use my media experience to create something exciting in a niche that aligns better with my values while also allowing me to be of service.
