Grocery Express is an innovative grocery business concept that solves a key issue many consumers face in our fast paced world. The idea is to decrease your grocery shopping experience from the typical thirty min to one hour shopping trip to a five minute express stop. You as a customer will simply create your order online through a fluent and easy to navigate website. Upon order completion you will state your desired pickup time, and depending on order size a minimum waiting time will be added. The earliest a customer could pick up his order would be thirty min for small orders, and the longest wait would be two hours for large orders. The customer will drive to the physical brick-mortar store and notify the store they have arrived for their order. The customer will never leave their vehicle, and will wait for the order to be delivered and placed in their car. This process should take five minutes or less, and think sonic drive thru, but instead of fast food being delivered to your car it is groceries you ordered.
This brings serious improvements to eliminating a time wasting chore that many of us experience weekly. This eliminates the hassle of physically pacing the aisles in search for your goods, wasting hours a week shopping for the same products you bought last week, and long waiting lines at checkout which easily takes longer than five minutes. This solves a serious problem many people face each week, shopping with your family can be inconvenient, shopping after work is a hassle, and the issue of shopping for your mother or grandfather can be solved in a simpler approach. Imagine that you can shop for your groceries during your lunch break, in the restroom, or even while your shopping at your local Wal-Mart. I also feel I could compete with large corporations because of the cost eliminating concepts my business will thrive on, while other typical brick-mortar companies simply cannot compete with.
The logistics of inside my store will be completely opposite of what you normally see in stores today. My store will be able to cut costs in so many different ways that I will not only be able to benefit customers short on time, but will also be able to have competitive prices. My cost cutting techniques include labor expenses with the elimination of cashiers and baggers. Since no customers will be physically entering my store I will also be able to greatly reduce the amount of stockers because I can eliminate the burden of shelf facing, display making, price changing, customer service reduced, and restocking items. Every item in the stores you see today has been touched at least three times. Touching includes from the backroom (boxed) to the front room (shelf), then from the shelf to the customers cart, and then from customer to checkout. My idea simply eliminates one of these touches. My store touches include from backroom to shelf and from shelf to completed order. This eliminates the customers work completely, giving them a reason to come back week in and week out. My idea essentially eliminates the front room, and this allows for a drastic decrease in costs. I could also eliminate store costs other ways as well including customer theft and eliminating the fifty or so coolers and freezers in typical stores into one large cooler and freezer, saving my company money. I will agree that there will be gigantic hurdles I will face with an innovative business like this.
Impulse shopping is one of the main ways brick-mortar companies use to generate profits. My idea eliminates the typical display you see in stores today, so creativity with the website is key to generating profits. The website would of course be the most important aspect to my business. If my website does not allow the customer with the convenience that I promise, my company will ultimately fail. I have innovative ideas on how to generate impulse purchases, and creating a mini grocery store in essence that is personal to that individual shopper. This company is a high risk venture, but with high risk comes high reward.
There is so much more that my company can offer than a typical store. My store allows a convenience factor that typical brick stores cannot. I also can compete competitively on prices because of the logistics of how my company works, and the cost cutting techniques I can implement because of my unique concept. I feel groceries can be digitalized and even though many online groceries have failed, mine has a fundamental different concept that many seemed to have passed up, the ability to have the customer come to you for pickup instead of delivering to their door which has many negative consequences for both the customer and the company. Grocery delivery has been proven to work under the right circumstances (peapod), but my idea eliminates many of peapods biggest complaints. Having to be home during a two hour slot to receive the order, charging a delivery fee, substituting items, and next day delivery. On the company side my idea eliminates the costly delivery trucks that require an ambient, cooler, and freezer area.
I am really looking for any insight as I am in the process of finishing my business plan, and already have some market research completed. I plan on entering this into an entrepreneurship challenge later this year. There is also so much more that my company can offer that I did not mention. My biggest questions right now include estimating costs, and acquiring seed funding to turn my dream into a reality. Thanks for your time, Matt Dietsch
