I'd been doing Muay Thai for a couple of months when my instructor came over and told the guy holding pads for me to raise them up for a head kick. I
I told my instructor I didn't think I could do it. I'm not the most flexible person, and I could do a body kick just fine but landing a head kick seemed like something other people with more flexibility than I could do. He just answered to do a head kick. I was a little worried that if I missed I was going to hit my partner but without giving it much thought I squared up and threw the kick. I head the the satisfying sound of my shin hitting the pads and inside I had a mini-2 second long celebration before I had to do it again and again till the training round was over.
I think of that sometimes when I feel like I'm overwhelmed and that there is a task in front of me that I can't do. I might not have an instructor yelling at me to just do it, but I can be my own angry Asian man telling me not to quit, to just trust myself and do something that I didn't think was possible, to push myself past the point where I want to give up.
Sometimes though I know I'm like another guy in my class who was maybe a little less flexible than I was but who constantly told himself that he couldn't kick very high. He'd ask you to lower the pads before every kick, he'd mumble to himself that he couldn't kick any higher and he didn't, in the year I took classes with him his kicks never got above waist level.
I need to constantly remind myself to kick that guy in the head when he starts telling me I failed before I even tried.
