Hello everybody,
As most of you already know, the Fastlane demands a lot of work and commitment. One thing that every form of work has in common is that it requires energy. So as a matter of course, it follows that one who has a more abundant supply of energy will find it easier to get more work done faster. Not only that, but you will also find that you are more effective at doing better work. When our bodies are healthy and energetic, our brains are happy, so we can concentrate better, think critically better, and perhaps most importantly, we are more stable emotionally.
Throughout the past few years I have tried and failed again and again to implement a regular exercise routine. I would build a fitness plan, write out all my goals, write out the exercises, meal plans, types of stretches, etc. Then, when it came to crunch time, a number of things would go wrong. I would fail to reach my initial rep/set goals. I would lose my determination. I would give up. Usually, in about three days everything I had planned would go to shit.
Recently, though, I've come across a method that actually works far, far better then anything I have ever experienced. When I thought of trying it initially, I was incredibly excited because I was confident that it would work. Before I could come and post a thread about it here, though, I had to test it out.
So I would proudly like to announce that I have exercised every single day for the past 7 days. Never before have I been able to do this. Not only that, but I have put more effort into each additional workout I've done. Tomorrow I will probably put even more effort in. And it's easy! It's actually fun! How did I do this?
Simple. I made a commitment to do no less than 2 push ups, every day, for thirty days.
This may seem ridiculous, but it's actually a golden strategy, and I recommend that everybody who reads this (if you've had the same problems I have) implement it immediately. It works in several ways, and each of these I have discovered from my own expectations. I'll list them below.
First, with such low expectations, when you begin to workout, there is absolutely no stress at all. All you have to do is two push-ups, and you've reached your daily goal. The key to forming a habit is daily reward. Meeting your goal is that reward.
Second, when you commit to doing 2 push-ups, you end up doing far more. Usually, I do to the max. Then I do sit-ups. Then chin-ups, squats, etc. Because when you're not 'forcing' yourself to do what you perceive as a difficult thing, you instantly develop the mindset of 'up for a challenge'. I could stop at 2, but why not go till 25? So not only are you exercising every day, you're actually increasing your workload, which in turns increases all of your benefits. Say your goal is to do 2 sit ups, and you end up doing 20. You've done TEN TIMES as much work as you set out to do! It has a crazy positive effect mentally and emotionally.
Third, instead of feeling the need to write out a complicated diverse plan of exercises, you end up switching it up on your own and being creative because you just feel like exercising different parts of your body. So I might go for 2 pushups, stop after 10 because I did 40 yesterday, and then do an ab workout, or a number of squats. "Legs" doesn't become a chore, it becomes a welcome change.
Fourth, and finally: After working out for 4 or 5 days in a row, you start to feel a compulsion to eat as healthy as possible. At least I have. Now I'm drinking water instead of soda. I look at a can of pop, and where I used to feel incredible cravings, now I envision a stack of sugar cubes. Sure, I still indulge in junk food occasionally, but nowhere near to the extent I was a week from now. I used to drink two or three cans of coke and eat a whole bag of chips while I watched TV. Now I drink water and eat salad while I read. It's amazing how fast your lifestyle can change once you start to form habits.
So, I'll repeat myself in saying that I recommend that anybody who has had trouble sticking to a workout routine give my approach a try. I guarantee that you'll at least do 2 push ups a day. If you suffer from obesity and can't manage 2 push-ups, try two squats without weights or two sit ups. Just find a workout you can do and do the bare minimum. I would wish all of you luck, but you won't need it. A few days from now you'll be making your own. I look forward to any replies, and I'll be updating this thread 23 days from now when I've reached my 30 day goal.
Peace out homies.
