I've recently joined the forums and thought I'd make a proper effort to introduce myself...
Who am I?
I am currently working full time in a Biotech startup in Cambridge - I'm learning a lot about running a business, but I'm working alongside some brilliant entrepreneurs and have developed a serious case of wanting to start my own company. My skill set is currently mainly operational and project management, although I've spent some time working with a team of developers to build IT solutions at work, I've written copy for the company's website and I've done a fair bit of work on existing customer relationships. No sales experience to date though!
Why am I here?
I have a 30-45 minutes commute each way everyday, which switched me onto podcasts. I've been listening to Smart Passive Income for over a year now. I became aware of the millionaires fastlane when MJ was on SPI session 18. I'm also a big fan of the Tropical MBA (formerly Lifestyle business podcast) and Manager Tools.
I'm carrying quite a lot of debt since my university days and with a young family I'm certainly not yet in a position to drop the 9-5, so I've been trying out a few things in the evenings. I've started a blog - which was growing well, but that I ultimately canned as I felt it wasn't going to be a viable business (which was my primary goal). I've also tried starting a niche site - but swiftly got bored.
More recently I listened to Dane Maxwell's interview on SPI - and this massively resonated with me. In my career to date my passion in every job I have had has been solving problems, and the idea that by identifying a deep enough source of pain it would allow me to build a software solution really seems to make a lot of sense.
So what next?
Sadly I'm not able to afford joining Dane Maxwell's Foundation this year - but he provides a tremendous amount of free, valuable content which I've been working from. Some of the former students (Carl Mattiola for example) also offer a lot of guidance on the process. I've started implementing idea extraction, although haven't pushed myself to cold call yet! I'm hoping to start building something real in the evenings, and work from there.
I feel really strongly though that I need to surround myself with like-minded people - for accountability, brainstorming, friendship, shared purpose - all that good stuff. And that's why I'm joining the forum - and one day the Fastlane!
