My name is Jacob and I am 23 years old. I haven't read TMF yet, but it is in the mail on it's way to my house right now. I have watched all of MJ's videos, and they made a lot of sense to me.
I've always wanted to own my business, I just didn't feel like I knew what I wanted to do or how to do it. I was told the typical slowlane storyline growing up; go to school, go to college, get a job, save and invest, live frugally, and it will pay of when you are old.
Through college I would always rack my brain for an idea that I thought was good enough, but I could never think of anything. I think it was a lack of skill combined with an incorrect focus that led me to 'never find a good idea.' After graduation, I got a job (where I am currently) as a business analyst at a subprime finance company. I've been here a year, and it is killing me. I have an hour commute each way to work, and I feel like I am doing nothing to increase the value of my own life.
About two months ago I asked a successful business owner/investor at my church if he would mentor me. He agreed, and that was the tipping point that changed the way I thought about business. We talked a lot about passive income and making businesses work for you, and he referred my to Pat Flynn's SPI podcasts. I listened to a bunch of them, and though things made sense, things hadn't really clicked for me yet.
Then I stumbled across a podcast where Pat interviewed Dane Maxwell. That interview shook the way I viewed creating a business, and after watching every other video with Dane I could find, my previously held conceptions about business were shattered. I realized that I was a newbie marketer who thought that a great idea or a niche without competition would make me succeed. His method of finding pain first, clearly defining it, and then trying to solve it made loads of sense to me.
I am not sure where I found out about MJ, but once I heard what he had to say on YouTube, I knew he was telling the truth. What he was saying closely linked with what Dane had been saying in the videos I watched; following your passion won't make you rich but adding value to the market by solving a problem is the way to go.
The past two or three weeks have really been great for me, as my total view of business shifted. I always have felt that I wanted to start a business, now I feel like that goal is within my grasp. I've read The Ultimate Sales Machine, some RichDad books (some good insights mixed with bad), Think and Grow Rich, among listening to loads of solid youtube videos.
Right now I guess I am a 'wantreprenuer' as I don't have a company, but I am talking action towards a goal which is better than what I've done in the past. I have been speaking with people in the trucking industry to try and determine specific areas of pain. In addition to that, I've been amazed at all the good business ideas that have hit me in the last few days; industrial parks with no close restraunts/food options, inventions, and even a canoe rental service.
I have not taken action of any of my recent ideas, as I've been emailing and talking to trucking companies; but I am excited at what the future holds. Looking forward to good discussion, and proving myself an action taker, not an action faker.
