Hello everyone! I've been a lurker on this forum for a couple of months. I finally decided I needed to join this week...and actually became an INSIDERS too, for good measure.
Here's my story so far.
I grew up in an mid/upper class area and was always surrounded by kids who had wealthy parents. Half the time I couldn't join my friends because I couldn't afford it. Growing up, I lived with my dad, who was an immigrant from Lebanon. He's come very far, considering at one point he lived in a refugee camp when he was younger. Despite this, he's still living in the slowlane as an accountant.
As soon as I graduated high school I joined the Air Force. I joined for many different reasons. I wanted to travel, pay for my own way in life, earn the GI Bill, and learn to live on my own. After serving four years, I can say that it's been one of the most important and valuable choices I've ever made. Now, I have ambition and focus. I'm no longer a procrastinator or a flake, and most importantly, I have developed a trait that pushes me to finish things I start.
Two years ago I got out the military (with a family in tow too! I had a son with my boyfriend of 3 1/2 years). I relocated to the expensive money pit that is the Bay Area. It's been challenging to say the least. Getting a job as a biomedical equipment technician wasn't difficult for me (part time too, which is even better), but my boyfriend has had issues. As of right now, I'm the sole support for my family, so it can get stressful.
I've been at my current job for a year now. In the meantime, I've been saving (as much as I can) like crazy. I want to have money as a safety net, and some for any businesses I'm going to create. Work, school (I'm going to apply to UC Berkeley this fall! I'm reconsidering finishing my degree, but I've been working at it for the past two years, plus it's free for me...and I get paid , and family keep me pretty busy.
Which leads me to where I am right now. I've recently created a supplement and started an ecommerce website. I should have read joined the INSIDERS forum a while ago, because I'm at the hardest part right now. Advertising! As IceCreamKid said, it's 10% the product and the rest is getting it out there.
Regardless, I still have a lot to learn. These are my first business ventures. I'm in a marathon, not a sprint. I've read The Millionaire Fastlane , so my next goal is to read every thread by MJ DeMarco, zend***phin, JackEdwards, IceCreamKid, Vigilante, and others (my apologies if I'm forgetting anyone). Right now I'm on page two of the threads zend***phin has created. Completely worth the read!
Oh, and side note. On Friday I went to my first REI meeting at a speakeasy in San Fran. The creators of BiggerPockets were there. I mentioned the fastlane forum to everyone I met. This site is a true gem. It's inspiring to see the progress some members (like JasonR and Likwid) have made.
TL;DR : Came from a poor-ish background. Looking to learn a lot. I'm excited to start my fastlane journey!
