Hi there! I'm new; hence, this is my introduction to the Fastlane Forum. I'm going to cheat a bit and copy/paste my bio here. This is the only forum I am on (and for someone who goes months without seeing another person besides my husband, you'd think I'd be a chatty cathy on the internet, but I find that forums/facebook/etc suck up a lot of time and I can't sit still for long...at all). But this I feel is worth it, and I look forward to discussing 'stuff' with entrepreneur folks. Thanks for reading. My bio if you will....
I grew up in Silicon Valley. Want to a private college and left it after a year to go live/work in Yosemite National Park (to my parents dismay). Came back to the Bay Area a few years later and worked in an animal shelter (one of the largest in the US). Worked my way up to manager and literally saved every penny I could for several years with the goal of owning my own property in the woods. While looking at potential property to own, I met my now husband who owns several hundred acres in N. CA. Left my job (reluctantly, because I did truly enjoy it) to move up/marry him. We own everything (no bills/no debt) and do EVERYTHING ourselves. My husband built our house, we've built animal barns (we get all the wood from the property by falling trees and milling it), raise our own meat, have a veggie/fruit (and hops!) garden, get our electricity from our hydroelectric system that my husband designed, chop our own fire wood (11 cords just to get us through winter), etc etc etc. We are 2 hrs away from anything in any direction, and we get snowed in completely at least 4-6 months out of the year. We don't get mail, trash services, ambulance, anything--we are completely on our own. It is a wild and free life, but it is HARD work. It is rugged. The glamorous concept of living off the land quickly goes away and reality sets in real quick. I tell people that the movie True Grit is a close comparison to life out here. There are no paved roads, bears/mountain lions/rattlesnakes, dope growers who are all too trigger happy, etc. I have four working dogs, chickens, goats, a cat and a mini lop rabbit.
I am living off of my savings, but have no income as of now. I am constantly wracking my brain as to what product I could improve/create. My TV indulgence is Shark Tank (and I've read all the 'Sharks' bios/business books). I’ve read countless business books (along with magazine, podcasts, you name it) of all sorts. My top favorite books are Millionaires Fastlane (who didn’t see that coming?), Imagine: How Creativity Works by Jonah Lehrer, and If You Don’t Have Big Breast Put Ribbons on Your Pigtails by Barbara Corcoran.
As a side note: my husband founded/built a successful business in S. CA many years ago. He sold it and bought the property that we live on now. He studies the stock market/economy--at any given time of the day we know what the Dow/Nas/S&P is doing.
