I struggled to register here since a couple of months. I read TMF in April 2013 and was FILLED with motivation. However (yes, the bad H word), I never took action since then. Actually, I never took action since 4 years now, after I read the 4 Hour Work Week, my first "Escape-the-9-to-5"-book.
I studied Computer Science here in Europe, did one semester abroad in San Diego and now I am stuck in a midsized company (around 600 people) and I am pretty much on the extra slow lane. Even if I earn more than the average, it's never enough to quit my job before 60. If I look ahead in time I see something, I don't like. Commuting to work everyday for over 2 hours, dealing with bosses who brown-nosed their way up to get a higher paid position and doing monotonous work day after day can't be my target. Unfortunately, if I tell this my closer friends or relatives they say "Well, that's life, we all have to work, save some money and retire with 65". This is how slowlaners think. And I am going straight ahead on this lane.
My biggest fear is to quit my job, create a business and fail miserably. Then I got no money, don't know how to pay my mortgage (even if it is not that high, like 18% of my current monthly income), people will approach and say "Hey, I told you so, self-employment is only for rich people", I loose my girlfriend, my house, my everything and being than in the mid-30ies will make it hard to find a slowlane job which pays me similar money like now. And worst of all, I'm still in the slowlane
You may be think now I am a pessimist. This is probably true but I want to be almost sure that I make a nice income in a "non-regular" job. I don't want to make millions (if it happens, I won't say no to the money thou). I want to help people, make them feel good, make me feel good and have a decent living.
What are my plans now?
After reading a lot I want to take action. I have a super small side business (mostly setting up server and websites) which I want to expand a little bit to cover my expenses, try quitting my job until the end of the year and in the meantime finding a need to start with CENTS.
Thank you MJ for the book and the forum and all the people who share their valuable knowledge and Golden Threads. And thank you for reading my whole post if you did. Clearly, I could have spent this 10 minutes in a better way but some things just had to be written from my soul
