My name is David and I live in Southern Utah. I am here because I have listened to TMF audiobook 10+ times but have yet to take any action (analysis paralysis). By immersing myself in the community, I plan to break though the action barrier.
My Story- Went to college and grad school for physics, lived on the sidewalk the entire time which lead to much debt. Transitioned to the slowlane with the current job and excelled (went from being hired at $18 per hour to 85K salary in just over 2 years). My job is also quite enjoyable, I travel every week and do work that is challenging/rewarding. To most outsiders this is a success story so far but there are problems.
First, to progress to salary over 100k will probably take 5 more years and to max out at around 130k would probably be 10-15 years. Of course this won't lead to financial independence until age 50+, but the next problem is the real deal breaker.
Time is life, as MJ so eloquently elucidates in TMF , and this job currently costs me a ton of it. I typically travel 1-3 weeks per trip while working 12 hours days throughout the period. Having a wife and two young children at home makes this a problem. You know its bad when you feel like a guest in your own home. And for my 3 weeks on labor I usually get 1 week off. This is not a trade off that I am comfortable with, which lead me to TMF.
Currently I use my evenings to research fastlane opportunities, but have yet to pull the trigger on any. My main restriction is that it must be internet based since I travel so often. I foresee developing a fastlane business part time in the evenings and then eventually going full time after getting some traction.
