Recently I have found myself needing to look up a lot of local places for information about their service. I moved to the area about two years ago, and I am still learning the ins and outs of the town.
I seem to be coming across A LOT of small local businesses that do not have websites. Although I am currently focusing on real estate, I have noticed the possiblity of a local need where I could pick up a good chunk of extra change for some downpayments on properties.
I asked the last few places that I went into why they didnt have a website and the responses were pretty similar. "Too expensive". Then I followed up with what is too expensive? and what do they need and want the website to do?
It seems that most of the small business are looking for a basic website with a bit of general information, pictures, and directions. I am no web designer by any means but I have built a few basic sites for myself and freids with WYSIWYG templates site builders. I figure I could even build these in something as simple as iWeb.
Please help deconstruct my idea and help me decide if this is something I can really get into or not. Pros and cons would be good too.
My basic plan if I did this:
1) Build a basic, clean looking website for myself as an example.
2) Approach the small businesses in the area and pitch them the idea. Basically that I was trying to find info on them and noticed they didnt have a website.
3) Show them what I have built for myself and explain what I could do for them.
4) if they go for it, get to work and build them what they want (within limits)
My concerns:
1) Would I put the domain name in their name right off the bat?
2) Do I have them sign up for hosting? or should I get some reseller account through someone like hostgator.
3) Obviously building websites with templates is not really "web design". Is this too much a half-a$$ way to do this? I dont want to short change anyone either.
Please offer your comments on the above and anything else I may not be thinking about.
Thank you!
