I am Adam, I work in Washington DC as a government security analyst, and I have been reading the forum for a few weeks. I started thinking about business ideas and the potential to work for myself as I saw that the traditional path wasn't going to work. I bought into the idea that higher education would equal higher pay and greater opportunities, and while I believe that I chose my higher education specialization well (undergrad in homeland security and emergency preparedness, masters in high tech crime investigation with years of EMS and leadership experience), I could see the writing on the wall. I recently got married, and that in addition to seeing my dad get closer to retirement from his very physical one-man business, and seeing his lack of opportunities or security, led me to the ultimate conclusion taht working for someone else wasn't how I was going to spend my working life.
I found that no matter my expertise or my ability to articulate a solution to a problem my government office was having, my ideas would not get implemented, mostly due to the government office culture. I have been working on some very high level stuff with global media coverage, and yet my suggestions and attempts at program improvement have been largely ignored by my management. This experience, in addition to seeing my dad's struggles, forced me to find another way and to use my frustrations to become my own boss.
I have a business structure (LLC), and some domain names (wefindgifts.com is one, donateforsports.com is another I am thinking about getting), and a business partner for one of my other ventures (building a roller hockey rink in Alexandria, Va). But I am at a crossroads, in that I am starting to get to the point where I am reaching the limits of my expertise or training, and I am worried or sometimes confused as to how to proceed without blowing money or time. I came here initially because of the success stories, seeking motivation and wisdom from them, but it didn't take long for me to realize that I would love to bounce questions and problems off this great group of people on these forums. That is why I am here. Hopefully I can contribute some of the things I have picked up over the few months I have been growing my start ups, in addition to learning from everyone else here!
