Well, I already made a similar thread on the "I've read the book thread" but I thought I should make a real thread to introduce myself.
I am a college student and I also work part-time at a grocery store. Both things are a little scary to me - college because I am completely NOT thrilled with the thought of graduating (which I should do hopefully next spring) just to work for someone else, making them rich. I don't want to be too negative about it, though - it's just my plan B - better than nothing!
Working at a grocery store sucks for a whole bunch of reasons, but the main one that is scary to me is that I am selling my life to them for the bargain rate of $9/hr. I believe my time is worth WAY more than $9/hr, but what can I do to get what I think I deserve (start a fastlane business of course!).
Since reading the book, I have been trying my hand at creating an online service business. So far, it has been a complete flop and I think that is because there wasn't enough need and not a big enough market.
All hope is not lost, however, with my online business. I can still improve my service and, if I can figure out how, grow my website into a thriving marketplace full of buyers and sellers. That will give it value and at that point it might possibly generate buying interest.
Even if it dies completely, it still gives me experience at starting my own business, that I have control over. I had previously made a little money as an affiliate in the jewelry industry, but I didn't like the lack of control and consistent cancellation of commissions. Not only that, Google just killed my website with their latest "Panda" update. I used to make about $700/month from affiliate commissions, now I'm at almost $0 (due to drop in my site's Google rankings which lead to lower traffic to my site).
Just putting the service together and starting my own business is a big step up from promoting affiliate products, even if my business doesn't make any money (yet).
I'm excited to just read and learn in here mainly, although I would love to network with people too. I would love to read about other website owner's experiences in creating a community online - I will search for that.
Actually, I think that businesswise I have already learned more from reading MJ's book than I have in 3 years in college. Time for me to read it again, actually.
Thanks for creating this great community - I've been browsing through and I like how you guys make threads into learning opportunities. I'm happy to be here.
