Hi everyone - here’s my introduction:
I’m a 16 year old guy and about a quarter of the way through reading my first DeMarco book: Unscripted - and thoroughly enjoying it. I am also fortunate to have parents who, while being ‘Scripted’ themselves, are supportive of this that I am looking into.
First of all I would just say that I won’t be one of the many, according to MJ in his book, that appear very interested and post an excited declaration of their dreams on the forum, only to leave shortly after. I understand myself enough to know that once I find something like this which is so blatantly worth the effort for a ‘dream life’ early on, I would never lull back into the easy, mediocre life (my life is not mediocre at all but only in terms of finances and freedom - this is probably more applicable once I finish secondary school (I’m from the UK so ‘high school’ in USA) and university (college). If I were to give up on this path, I would deeply know that I would’ve betrayed myself of what I really want and need. Btw I have Asperger’s - I mention this only because I believe it can help with remaining committed to a particular interest and pursuing it - it could have also contributed to helping me get to where I am now in my music-making; playing piano to a high standard (mostly classical), composing and general love of music.
Another thing that I would add, relating to the previous paragraph, is that I ‘honour the process’ rather than focusing on the event, so I do understand how entrepreneurship is a process, just like my piano-practising and the dedication needed for it, as well as my training in the Alexander Technique to a fairly advanced level. I won’t try to describe what AT is much as it is fairly impossible to grasp just with a little explanation - it requires a hands-on teacher - but simply it is an education of how the body is naturally designed to work and function and a training in how to use your thinking to bring about change in how you use yourself. It’s a stopping and thinking to intercept the habitual, unconscious response of movements and the condition your muscles/whole system are in, to allow a freer and easier use of yourself in movements or simply just being still. Perhaps it could be said that it is about using your mind to massively reduce tension and allow more freedom in all you do. Btw this is not some fad that doesn’t work - it is completely proven and effective with science and logic, but the point I am making is that this is very much an exercise in process, of using your mind intelligently. Hence why very few know about it or train to a high standard in it; it’s the opposite of a quick fix or cure. And so I believe this will help my entrepreneurial pursuits.
I don’t expect to be making any significant moves with entrepreneurship in the next few years, but I think that after reading MJ’s three main books (I got them for Christmas) I will at least have a solid understanding of ‘how it all works’, and who knows, may even begin making some small bets in these next few years to give me valuable learning experience testing the waters of this all. Actually I do rather want to start providing value to many as soon as possible to break the ice of that first hurdle of just getting started.
One more thing I would like to write about is my journey over the last few years of learning about financial things. It began in late 2019 with some simple investing every month into the same two stocks (somehow one of them, Pets At Home, has done really well and is up around 80% in return for me with a decent chunk of cash invested originally) then a load more stocks later on, until basically diving into the world of learning about all things investing, particularly on YouTube, and even last year I spent a good few months being seriously dedicated to learning and writing down notes of how to trade forex from YouTube, doing virtual money practice on the side, until I eventually realised what a waste of time it was (and it is still trading time for money). And I watched a lot about general personal finance advice and learnt about property investment through reading books. I must say that when I learnt that pretty much all I had been learning was essentially Scripted - i.e the focus on investing - that was interesting, and it is really great to have clarity of thought and action on how entrepreneurship works.
I’m excited for life.
