I read the MF a few months ago, devoured it in about a day and then re-read it several times since. I found these forums a couple of weeks ago.
Some background on me - I've been a worker drone up to this point. I designed, sewed and sold shirts to a local retail store in high school, but have primarily worked for other people instead of myself. I've always wanted to start and run businesses, and had lots of ideas, but no execution. I would get really excited about a potential idea, get hyped up - and then convince myself it wouldn't work, and go back to hating my day job. Pretty pathetic.
Anyway, my husband and I decided that we were sick of whinging about circumstances that were totally created by us. We sold probably 98% of our crap, quit our jobs, and moved out of our apartment. Then we bought an RV and drove from Ohio to California. We barely had enough gas to get here. Our reasoning was to throw ourselves so far out of our comfort zone and our safety net - family and a network to bail us out - that we would have to make something work.
We spent several months job hunting before we moved out here, but people don't like to hire from out of state, so we got flexible. We're working with a local farm - basically an apprenticeship program, where we work for 25 hours a week, per person. We get a place to park the RV, utilities, and $100 bucks a week for food/gas, and they get free labor, essentially. Obviously money is beyond tight right now; but it's just the two of us (and our cat), we have minimal expenses, are forced to be extremely creative and resourceful, and it is uncomfortable enough to keep forcing me to move forward.
Apparently the only way I decide to change is by ripping the training wheels off my bike, lighting them on fire, and then crashing into a tree at full speed. Basically these last months have been the best and hardest of my life up to this point.
I am finally set on an idea, that I am going to execute NO MATTER WHAT. If I try and crash, so what. I learned a few things. I'm going to get my domain name and hosting this week, then start cold-calling like crazy.
I've already learned a ton from snooping around the forums, and I'm excited to meet all of you!
