Among a number of other things, I own a website called Scalp Guru (www.scalpguru.com). I do a lot of freelance work in the scalp micropigmentation industry. Basically scalp micropigmentation is a head tattoo that you get when you're losing your hair. Don't prejudge until you've seen it guys, the results are often astonishingly good. Anyway the industry is growing but still very fragmented, so I launched this site as an independent resource of information about 18 months ago. It was never intended to be a money-spinner, it was a passion more than anything else.
Anyway, I don't have enough time on my hands now for this to be just a hobby site. Either it starts to make money, or it has to go. I have tried to monetise it in a number of different ways, but I'm struggling to make it work.
Current traffic is approx 500 unique users per day. It is neck and neck with another similar site. Hard to say which is #1, but there isn't much in it. My site definitely looks better though, and has much better content.
So I could use some advice on how to monetise this site. Here are my options (I think):
1. Sell more display ads. I do this already and get about £500 per month (GBP). I have tried to take on more advertisers at various price points but I'm not winning new customers. I think it's because other companies in the industry know I'm tied to one of their competitors through freelance work I do, so I don't know if expanding this is a realistic option.
2. Google Adsense. I already do this, but traffic is too low to really have an impact.
3. Affiliate links. Started doing this (1 product live) but due to low traffic, feel this is a distraction rather than a solution.
4. Lead generation. I can't do this due to a conflict of interest with my freelance client.
5. I could sell the website.
So you see, I'm in a tough spot, hence the request for advice. To be honest I don't have the same passion for the site as I once did, and if a buyer came forward and offered the right price, I'd sell it. I just don't know if that will happen because there is only a handful of companies in the industry that operate a scaled-up business that could benefit from an international portal like this.
Any help or advice would be gladly received.
