I've put it in the private part of the forum for various reasons, one being that though my account is anonymous I'd rather not post this in the public part of the forum.
The point is simply this- throughout recorded history "charities" and "charitable causes" have been used by some as PR exercises, vehicles to influence public policy and opinion for private gains and a way to increase one's power indirectly or directly.
Though undoubtedly some of his policies have done some good, in my opinion some of the projects in Bill Gates' foundation aren't as noble as they first seem. He seems to be talked and thought of generally very positively at the forum and I can see why, he is an entrepreneurial inspiration, but it doesn't take much digging to start to see patterns emerging in some of his strategies
So why make this point at the fastlane forum? Well, basically it's just something to be aware of (even if you disagree with this angle on things). We're discussing money- but really it's more about power/wealth/freedom (which money can help give us), this is an under discussed strategy that a portion of the super wealthy use in their wealth tool box.
Some side notes
- not from 1st hand experience, but another great tool is how some also use charities as great networking tools once they achieve a certain level of success and are say invited onto the board of certain charities- they get to meet other "successful" people on an equal termed environment (Uk entrepreneur James Caan explains this in his book well, though its also picked up in other books like Arnold Schwarzeneggers etc)
-charitable or social change movements can also be used to great effects by products/brands if they can find an angle to jump on the bandwagon and associate their product with it somehow. Most famously by Freud's nephew and his "Torches of Freedom";
