I have an idea for a website and some products so I can cash in on some 'intellectual property'. I've been playing with the idea for a couple years, but never really did anything about it.
It will be somewhat of a technical sports website for a specialized position that is often neglected in the sport, and I've become somewhat of a local expert on (I've trained some players that have moved on to our national training programs and run regular 'clinics' for local clubs). This isn't a ground breaking thing, it's just putting my own spin on something that has been done by others. It wll be a website with products that I create (books, DVD's on techniques and drills...already have very rough drafts/concepts) as well as outsourced merchindise from brand names (equipment, maybe more books and DVD's) and possibly a 'members' area with more advanced concepts for a small one time or annual fee. It's a major sport played in almost every country around the world, so aside from a possible language barrier it could be an international seller. This position is the only one on the team that requires different technical skills from every other player and requires somewhat specialized training over and above the skills the rest of the players need so it is often neglected on the amature level because of a lack of help or available specialists.
When I used to manage bands I DIY'd everything myself through it getting their website made and CD into local stores and selling through online places like cdbaby.com and then some out of city/province stores and it was a lot of work. I learned a few basics but it's a different industry. I want to work smarter, not harder this time...
Where would be the best place to start? Create the website then add the products later? Create the products and launch it all at once? What's the first step in creating the products? Am I best to DIY the publishing or outsource since I don't know anything about it and it's my first crack at this? What's the best 'fastlane' way of getting this going?
Any suggestions on where to start would be great...
