Hi All,
I heard about this forum through the warrior forum, so I came over, read some Notable and Gold posts to get a feel for the vibe of this forum and if I could learn from it (I can, clearly, haha) and made an account. It said to post a Intro, so here I am
I'm an aspiring entrepreneur and have a few business/entrepreneurial ventures under my belt. The most notable ones are I quit my job and started a housecleaning business in 2007 and did that for about three years, until the one marketing method I was taught (flyers stuck to people's doorknobs in upper middleclass neighborhoods) stopped working because I was tired of walking all over neighborhoods AND then cleaning houses (I think I was just getting burnt out after three years). During that time though, I read a lot of books on business (4HWW, a bunch of the Rich Dad, Poor Dad books, Donald Trump's books like Art of the Deal, etc) and was sure I wanted to be an entrepreneur.
I then got a job to get some financial stability so I could continue doing business stuff on the side until something took off. Robert Kiyosaki said that sales was the most important skill you could have in business, and I knew my lack of marketing knowledge (I only knew one way to market my previous housecleaning business) was what bit me in the butt, so I took an inside sales job at a home alarm system company. I learned how to sell on the phone and got to where me and another sales person were tied for first place as highest selling salesperson.
Then I found the "online business" space and tried selling ebooks. I hired VA's from the Philippines and got some ebooks and websites made, but again...I had a difficult time finding customers and driving traffic to the sites. (ie marketing weakness strikes again). I also was at a tech job at that time (I'm a woman but for lack of a better term, I was the office "IT guy" for a small manufacturing company) and due to how little I was making, I had to shut down the ebook business and lay off my VA's as there just wasn't enough funds to take the business to the next level.
I decided I had to get serious about trying something but having enough money to get (and keep) things off the ground. So I went into Silicon Valley tech so I could make as much money as possible in order to save up a nice "entrepreneurial nest egg" to start my next venture with. I decided to go into DevOps/Site Reliability Engineering and taught myself the skills I'd need by researching on forums and job posts what skills were needed, then researching what free and paid resource there were to teach me those skills, then I made my own little "curriculum" and shut myself up in a room in my parent's house (who I was living with at the time-I was unemployed and had to move back in with them) and literally spent 8 hours a day, every day working through my program and teaching myself the right skills.
Long story short, after about 6-7 months of this, I got a devops job, and in six years, I ended up at Google, as I used my entrepreneurial background to pick a startup to work for that soon after I joined got bought by Google, and then there I was. I worked for Google for about a year doing Site Reliability Engineering for them and then once I had a good nest egg built up, I left. About a year before I left I decided I'd focus on an online course business, as I noticed a gap in the dating advice market and worked to fill it. I started a Youtube channel to get my info out there and start helping young women who had the same problem I had, and just generally to see what videos and advice resonated with people and what didn't, etc before I started building courses and trying to sell them. I also hired and managed a video editor/VA and we put out a lot of content.
So that's where I am right now-my job at Google was extremely demanding, so I never had time to fully grow the channel and right now it's at about 240 subscribers after about two years of consistent weekly video posts. I also recently got married, and am a stay-at-home wife right now (we have a kid on the way, due in December
) so now I have the time to really develop this business idea and see if it "has wings". (At least until the baby comes-I imagine I'll probably disappear from the forums temporarily from about December to say, March while I get a newborn/new little human up and running
)
I'm in the process of doing what I did for learning DevOps and making my own curriculum and have been hanging out on forums seeing what skills people recommend are most important, the best places/books/courses to learn those skills and am putting together my own "business curriculum" that I'll work through. I plan on getting and reading Unscripted and TMF , although I've already read threads on the CENTS framework and other ideas so I'm at least somewhat familiar with the Fastlane mindset. Since it looks like marketing/gathering traffic is my biggest weakness I'm gonna focus about 80% of the self-taught program there, so if anyone has any recommendations, feel free to let me know. Right now, I've already read Russell Brunsons trilogy of books, and am gonna read some Dan Kennedy, and especially Jay Abraham, as I've heard he's good with JV's and I know my market would be best reached by collaborating with other Youtubers and influencers. I'm a tech nerd-more of a builder of the social networks than an actual user of them, so I have a lot to learn, haha. (in russell brunson's book trilogy he mentioned that social media is like a party and you show up and talk to people...this was a REVELATION to me people...a REVELATION!! hahahha...that's how much of a introvert/nerd I am) I'm also working with my VA to set up a sales funnel and sell a mini course as a proof of concept kinda thing. I plan on using FB ads to get initial traffic, and then I'll see how it sells and adjust/test things from there. (ie test the FB ads, the sales letter, the copy, the offer, etc...basically test everything to see how we can get a winner)
Anyways, thanks for reading and for all the helpful posts you guys have made over the years here. I really appreciate getting to soak up all your knowledge. I will try to give back value where I can...my skillsets that could help are I am good with hiring and managing VA's and also the crypto field as I almost did a career shift from DevOps into Blockchain development and was interviewing and got job offers at a couple crypto companies to come build their blockchain with them. I also have invested in crypto and have made some good returns there, so I can help with that too. (Crypto I see as more of a buy and hold kinda thing though-I don't day trade it or anything like that. And please for the love of God-DO NOT GET ON THE NFT BANDWAGON....NFT's are a joke!!
)
Have a good day!
