I wasted too much time killing business ideas before I saw them through. Perhaps by outlining the changes in my mindset I can prevent some of you from repeating my mistakes.
What I did when I was a "serial wantrepreneur":
- Spent hours brainstorming names before I had even solidified my product idea, let alone established demand.
- Got a huge emotional high when I thought of an idea, then wasted time building it out before even confirming there would be a customer base willing to pay/spend time on my idea.
- Quit at small hurdles, mope and complain that I wasn't good enough, and let the existence of competition dissuade me from pursuing the few ideas that were actually viable.
What I began to do differently:
- Rather than trying to build a wrecking ball that would blast me into a level of success that I was not even ready to face, I began focusing on small, seemingly insignificant goals and tasks.
- I started finding customers one by one rather than trying to hit it big with ads, sponsorships that were out of my budget, and viral gimmicks.
- I chose an idea that I cared about. This made getting those individual customers infinitely easier. They believed in my idea and were willing to spend their time and money on it because I was.
TL;DR: Used to spend time on useless tasks (coming up with names, marketing gimmicks, trying to make it big instantly). Now focus on small, targeted goals that lead to guaranteed results.
As a passion project, I now write a weekly motivational email for entrepreneurs (goes out every Monday morning, first thing waiting in your inbox to start the week). Would love to have you be one of our first 100 members. PS, it's 100% free : )
