I know there are discussions on this topic all over this forum and others, but I am overwhelmed!

Ultimately, I want a site that offers about a thousand products in a specific niche. Individual artists would offer their works for sale on the site and would pay me a commissions for doing so. I would also like to offer an affiliate program. It would be a bonus if the artists could update their individual sections of the site only (not have access to the whole site).

I am starting from scratch now, but have tested the market through conversations. So, I would still like to test it in the real world and not be locked into an expensive software or web development project.

I am a wordpress user, but everything seems to point to using wordpress as a bad idea for a full blown ecommerce store. From what I can tell, selling a few products in Wordpress via plugins seems to work well, but more than that is not advised.

There seem to be a lot of good comments about Shopify and Big Commerce. Big Commerce seems to be the better choice of the two due to better SEO. At least they claim to be SEO experts. I wouldn't be interested in a store where I couldn't optimize each page title to be keyword rich. My past experience has shown me that SEO is king and it would be a waste of time if I couldn't control page titles, image alt tags etc.

Finally, I hear good things about Magento, but am not willing to shell out the thousands per year required. I might be willing to do that when things get up and running, but not until my idea is tested. They do offer a free version, but it gets sub-par reviews from what I have found.

Questions:
Any other options out there you are happy with?
Would it me be hard to start small and switch to another platform later?

Any suggestions/comments are very much appreciated.

Thanks!
