I am pretty excited to share this ….
(Note: This Method Can Be Applied No Matter Where You Live)
Alright, so I still happen to go to University and while on campus, I was thinking about the business me and my partner have been researching and working on.I was feeling kind of “off†and I felt like I wasn't being as productive as I could be.
I decided, alright, well in that case I need to do something to get out of my comfort zone...
The first thing that came to mind was to call an old colleague who wrote code (although not for the web).I “buttered him up†(if you will),on the phone and then I asked him if he could write code for websites. He said no but “he has friends†that might. I inquired some more, but the bottom line was that this guy is just as lazy as I remember him and he kind of half promised to look into for me....
I instantly wrote him of. Unless he was going to act today, I wasn't going to count on him, ever.
So I instantly forced myself to come up with something else. I thought “Oh crap†there is that office that hands out computer equipment with a bunch of students working there! Why don't I go and ask them if they are programmers/web designers. I go there and turns out that they are just some randoms who loan out equipment.... sigh
I look across the hall and I see “Aerospace Engineering Technicianâ€... and the door is open!Great, why not ask this professor if he has some stellar students I could talk to “ A voice in my head says, no he's in aerospace, he won't know any...â€
As soon as I heard this in my head, I immediately proceeded to walk into his office.
I was polite, knocked and introduced myself. He was friendly and accepted my request to ask him aquestion.
My Question: “ Do you have any stellar students who are web programmers/designers?â€
Professor: “ You are in the wrong building, the design and arts building is over thereâ€
WOW... How on earth did I not think of this before lol! MAYBE I should go to the building that teaches people exactly what I am looking for!!! ( I know I am a genius right? Ahaha)
Alright, So I go over to the design building and some skater “hipster†looking guy is walking by...
Me:“ Hey, are you a web designer or programmer by any chance?â€
Dude: ( who is shocked and needs a few seconds to regain focus) : ummm nah man, but you should check on those couches, there are probably a lot of them in there...
Me:Yup my thoughts exactly thanks
There was about 5 tables lined up of students doing work.
Here is how I approached them and sparked interest!
Table1: “Hey, sorry to bother you guys, but is anyone here a web designer?â€
3 People said no....1 girl said …. no ….. BUT... then she said “why do you need one?â€
Me:“Yup, it's a great opportunity because its for a start upâ€
Girl:“ Oh HOW COOL, what start-up†(I did not want to appear like a douche, but on the other hand I did not want to tell her either) so I said...
Me:“ I would love to tell you, but my partner would kill me “ (This is actually true, he is way more hung up on this than me... and it worked gold! Simply because now I had an out without appearing like a smug bastard who thinks he invented Facebook)
Her:“ Ohhh it's one of those, come on you have to share with us!†(People hate when they feel that you know or have something and don't tell them, but I think they in particular hate it when they think that it may make you wealthier over them... feel free to comment on this, I am rather interested in what you have to say !) - btw, this would only apply to people with a scarcity mindset... just wanted to clarify before I got the 5[SUP]th[/SUP]degree from some of the heavy hitters lol
Me:“Lol, well the designer will know â€
I ended up giving her my contact info and she was typing it into her e-mail when I left. I got her name and shook her hand just to leave a good image of me in her head.
Some key things she asked during out conversation that I did not mention but I feel are important:
I also approached the other tables and oddly enough none of the people sitting at them were designers/programs. Odd, but such is life. I had an exam so I left to review my notes quickly, but I will be going back (perhaps even to the classrooms) and just asking around.
Alright, so there you have it !
Here Is What I Want YOU to do.... Do you need a designer/developer/programmer? If yes, why not go local to retain more control and get it cheap by hiring acollege/university student? … exactly
So then, how are you going to attain one? Tell me your plan on getting that local talent for cheap !
Here is an example:
For entrepreneurs that are just starting out / who are possibly in university: Just do exactly what I did. (note: it helps that I go to the university because in the students head we have something in common already and I am part of their community, so they are willing to trust me more (yes I just gave you a brief lesson on psychology )
For Very Busy Veteran Entrepreneurs:You could get your family or friends involved. Know anyone in your family that goes to university or hangs out with people that do? Why not ask them to get you 5 stellar candidates for $50 bucks … give them criteria and tell them that the 5 candidates have to meet it or else they don't get the $50.
I hope this post helped and I can report my experience with the students I will interview if you wish.
Of course, if you have any more questions/concerns or requests, I am more than willing to answer all of them.
