Haven't been on here in a while (busy as hell), thought I would drop with a way to learn:
A) A Brand New Skill
B) Get Paid For Learning it
C) See In Real Life, What it takes to run a business + How To Deal With Customers
A while ago, I did a short internship with a SEO company and one of the guys I used to talk to often, told me that learning how to design things on the fly will save me boat loads of time in the future. (Quick designs for testing are key!)
Naturally I took it upon myself to learn the skill. How?
3 Steps:
1.) Initially started watching Photoshop tutorials on youtube whenever I was eating. Then I would try the exercise after I ate.
2.) I was looking for perhaps a quick course ... (groupon had a promotion for $50 for a $600 course) -> I took that upon immediately and signed up for the 1 week course
-> funny thing, I offered quite a bit of value to the guy running the business, so he took down my contact info and we are buddies ever since (Also, whenever I had a question, guess who I was calling?)
( The value I gave was talking to him about marketing and what he could do with his list of previous customers)
3.) I decided to start selling my design services because I know that's the best way to learn. I searched around fiverr.com and noticed gaps in the value propositions.
-> I filled those gaps and offered the first gig. It was an order for 4 different designs and I said that I could design them all no problem (Disclaimer: I HAD NO IDEA HOW I WAS GOING TO DO IT..lol)
Needless to say, It took me 2+ hours for the first 3 gigs. This was a good thing though... because during those 6+ hours I learned exactly how to design.
-> any problem I had, I "youtubed".
The gigs I delivered were so good, that I got 3 referrals the very next day from that 1 customer.
The process got easier and easier, until designing became second nature.
Bonus:
Not only do I know have a skill for life that is useful in every business scenario, but I learned the following:
- How to deal with different customers and their demands (some guy asked for 15 revisions)
- How to sell yourself and drive traffic to your gig (or business)
- The process of taking something you have never done and becoming great at it
- The process of looking at the market and finding needs that need to be met in order to succeed
- How to create customers for life (when I stopped offering the gig, I had constant e-mails begging me to put the gig back up)
