How To Manage Multiple Freelancers At The Same Time

Hello everyone!

Recently I started using freelancers to outsource some of my work. First I used the platform Freelancer.com. They have a quite good milestone payment system. But later I continued to work with some freelancers directly, without this platform because we knew each other already. Outsourcing is still quite new to me and I am currently have 5 freelancers working for me on different projects at the same time.

This is a question for those who are using multiple freelancers at the same time. How do you keep track about the progress, payments and so on, espeacially if you are not using the main Freelancer.com, eLance or Odesk platforms? Any specific software tools that you would recommend?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.
