Hi everyone,
I figured I would make a thread about reaching out to accomplished, hard-to-reach entrepreneurs and celebrities. I've had some luck getting in contact with some cool people and I figured I would share both my own opinions and an article or two on how to do it.
I'm aiming to earn a million dollars in two years to retire my family and become financially free and i've broadcasted my goal on this forum (millionaire by 25). In these past 9 months, I've had some success reaching out and getting some time with some interesting people.
In the previous 9 months, some people I've met include:
1. Ben Stewart (11x world champion karate champion and Ottawa business man of the year, multimillionaire)
2. Kevin Thomason (sold his company, PostRank to Google for millions)
3. Andrew Teeple (co-founder of real estate development company that has acquired and developed 300 units in 3 years)
4. Com Mirza (millionaire affiliate marketer)
5. Jonathan Anderson (MLM millionaire)
6. Lights (singer)
7. Missy Higgins (singer)
8. Shia Labeouf (actor - did not get to actually spend time with him)
I'll break it down into categories of how I've done this, and how you can do it to. Afterwards, I'll list what other people insist you do -
Step #1 - Have a clear, defined purpose of why you want to meet this person
Whether it's to meet them for a beer or to get mentorship, you need to figure out exactly WHY you want to meet this person. Try and make it unique. Think about how important it is on a scale of 1-10 and envision what this will do for you by meeting them. How you will feel, how it will change your life, etc.
Step #2 - Timeline
0-5 out of 10 (importance) Write the goal down, keep it in mind in case an opportunity arises, but don't go out of your way to reach out to this person until it becomes a higher priority.
5-8 - This is where you want to explore options from the comfort of your home, set a deadline to meet this person and begin taking action towards it.
8-10 - Make it an immediate priority to write down your deadline to meet this person TODAY.
Step #3 - How to meet them
1. The first thing you want to do is explore the easiest options first. Go through your Facebook, Twitter and Phone contacts and write down people you know that are influencers and that may either know this person, or know someone who knows them. Explore your warm market, so-to-speak.
2. The next thing you want to do is begin watching videos of this person, read articles and interviews and really get an idea of their personality and what's important to them. You want to be at a level of comfort where you could sit down for coffee with them and hold a conversation (they preach this exercise in the self-help book, "psycho cybernetics").
3. From there, you want to open as many one-way communications as possible (subscribe to their Facebook posts, subscribe to their blog via RSS feed, etc.). This will give you an indication of what they're interested in right now and you will be the first to know about when they may come to your town, or are filming nearby, etc. **This is key for when you are at a 0-7.5 out of 10 because you can stay in the loop and when they come closer to you, you can take measures then, and only then, to meet them/connect with them).
4. Once you have the above completed, you can begin reaching out to them via two-way communication outlets (Twitter, Contact e-mail on their website, Phone # for their agent, Snail mail).
Here's an article on how to get celebrities to Tweet back to you and open communication
How To Get Celebrities To Tweet You
Tim Ferriss has a very good approach to meeting celebrities in his book, The 4 Hour Work Week, but here's a video about it.
How to meet famous people - YouTube
He basically says to find out what they are interested in, and offer help first so that they are obliged to return the favour. Someone has met Tim Ferriss like this. Mark Allen, author of The One Minute Millionaire suggests the same thing.
8.5-10 - If it is extremely pressing that you feel your life depends on meeting this person pronto, or you're just extremely motivated, you can look into where they are, where they're going to be. Make it known that it's your goal publicly and be on high-alert. I met Lights, Missy Higgins, Shia Labeouf and Kevin Thomason this way. Be prepared to travel if you have to, be honest, transparent if and when you connect with them. It's too lengthy to explain, but if people want to know more of how I've done this, then I can answer it. There's an example of a gentleman who traveled to Thomas Edison's office committed to working with him in Think and Grow Rich.
------------------------------
I'll leave it open-ended from here, but let's make this a collaborative effort to educate each other on how to accomplish this. Share stories, etc. I know it's something that we all think about and think it would be cool if we met that one person or group of people.
