For those who don't want to read: This article offers some great information/points on defeating competition on another level. As you all know, people will try to copy you once you become known. Becoming better than them at things is one way to succeed. However, you can go a step further by doing something other people CAN'T do, like doing something that would require them to restructure their whole business or fire/hire new people.
You could also solve a problem in a way that newcomers won't be able to imitate, due to its hidden process, such as a different transaction method or quality control. Another method is consistently staying "with the times" and innovating, like Apple, which will make you a "moving target" of sorts.
