One of the things I've struggled with when
starting a local business is whether or not people
will actually want what I have to offer
Google search can help but how many
people search "Fresno breakfast burritos"
Not many - but hundreds are sold a day in Fresno
If they don't want what you have to offer
then you're going have to "create" demand
Which is going to be harder then simply
supplying a service or product which
people already want
Method
Go to your local Craigslist and head over
to the "free" section
Next, you will post whatever your service or
product is (or is going to be) for FREE
See if you don't have people emailing you their
phone numbers, asking for details, wanting
your number, etc.
(I didn't add my number, I said email me
back if interested in "x"...I made it harder
on purpose to see if people will go out of
their way to get into contact with me)
If people aren't willing to get what
you have to offer for "free" then it's
fair to say that there isn't much demand
for your product or service
From there you can figure out a way
you can make your product free by
offering a free trial or something like
that.
I tested 4 different local business ideas
Product A was a physical book on dating
Results = nothing
Product B was a free eBook on dating on my website
Results = flagged as spam
Product C was a "free" low priced B2B product (I won't disclose this)
Results = 10 emails with contact info within 30 minutes
Product D was a "free" low priced B2C product (Very similar to B2B but for consumers)
Results = 2 emails within 4 hours
Conclusion?
Obviously there is a "free" demand for my B2B product
so now what I'm going to do is follow up with the emails
and let them have a "free trial" of my product
I know this isn't a perfect testing method for every one
but if this makes sense for your product
or service...it wouldn't hurt to try it out
