Since I've gotten so much value out of this forum already, I felt like giving something back.
I'm still at the start of my fastlane journey. I don't have a customer base, revenue, product or e-mail list..yet.
It's inspiring to see seasoned forum members share their journey with guys like me. However, what's most inspiring for me at this point is not their lifestyle, their income or their networth. It's their attitude toward the process. If you read between the lines, you can see their excitement and passion for what they do and it fuels my passion for starting and growing a business again and again.
MJ's video about the desert of desertion really resonated with me. I've started working on my idea 2 weeks ago and I'm nowhere near the excitement that comes from a tangible growth and process.
Instead of dreaming about cars, estates and island, I'm slowly starting to envision one thing and one thing only: the moment when I look at my bank account and see the FIRST revenue. Right now, this goal is far more exciting to me than the aforementioned things.
Depending on how it goes, it will take a while to get there. This period is very difficult and I have to admit that I'm often accompanied by uncertainty and doubts. Many wantrepreneurs broke and retreated and I can see why.
I'm pushing through though. And the only reason why is because of MJ's book and this forum.
The best thing I've learned here is to focus on needs and value, always. While probably all of you follow this concept, I'd like to view it in a different light and apply it to the desert of desertion.
Focusing on providing value for someone with a need makes it SO MUCH EASIER to get through the desert.
The best metaphor I can think of is this:
You are standing in the dark and there are 10 doors in front of you. All you know is that a scalable and profitable business is on the other side which means that if you reach it, you'll finally get the chance to experience the excitement of the process that so many users here experience every day. Forget the cars and houses for a moment. We want to get there first.
The second thing you know is that one door out of those 10 leads to the holy grail. You don't know which one but it's certain that one does.
Now the great thing: Focusing on providing value made me realize that needs and problems don't change. Just because your AdWords campaign hasn't resulted in sales or leads doesn't mean that the problem and need you identified has changed or gone away. It's still there.
You have decided to open one door and hit a wall. It's painful in the beginning but if you think about it, you now know that the chance to reach the golden room has gone from 1/10 to 1/9. I wasn't the best at math but the odds have become better, haven't they?
If you hit a wall after opening the 2nd door, it's probably even more painful but now the odds are only 1/8.
Every door you open, every wall you hit increases the odds of success. You learn which way doesn't work, you learn what to avoid and after 9 doors, after 9 walls (maybe even less), you know that this is the door to the life you've always dreamt of. Can you imagine how exciting the moment must be? If you are standing in front of the door that leads you to the golden room, you will not waste single second thinking about the other 9 doors or walls. They're irrelevant. You're focused on kicking in that 10th door and growing the business you've found to unexpected dimensions.
I'm excited to arrive at the 10th door because I know that the pain of failing 9 times will be gone once I'm standing in front of it. The needs and problems don't change, only your approach does. If you identify a need, consider it a success because it won't run away. Instead, it's waiting for you to figure out which door to kick in.
I came up with this analogy today and decided to share it with you guys. I'm still not where I want to be, far from it actually but I'm happy to be standing in front of the doors. I know that the odds are against me right now but they will be in my favor every time I open a door and go all the way. Most people will never do that.
And we should never forget to turn the lights on for those who are walking towards the doors. It'll make it easier for them. On that note, thanks to MJ and all the other contributors for igniting a fireball. Can't wait for you to approve my INSIDERS subscription.
Sorry for the long post. Back to work!
