I really need help and honest answers.
My new site and fastlane idea is I Be Irie - Reconnect with Nature with Relaxation Nature Videos.
Initial market research showed others are doing something similar, but usually without natural sound. That is one of my main points of difference. Also, the video quality of the competition is not always as good. I found this amazon rainforest video on YouTube which is hugely popular and people wanted natural sound and picture. So my idea seemed like a good one.
The concept is to use the natural beauty which surrounds me where I live and bring it to people who cannot access it easily, for them to use digital devices to access the videos. The idea is members would come home, choose a video and put it on their flat screen TV, use surround sound to fill their home / apartments with the sound of birdsong or water, and use this to reduce stress.
I've recently reworked the site to focus on meeting a need; stress relief. I can think of other sub groups within my target market such as mums with babies and small children, and I intend to write sales pages and ppc campaigns to focus on them too.
However, so far the results are very disappointing. After running a ppc campaign with 293 clicks I have 12 conversions, which is okay at 4%, but not great. The problem is no one who converted actually watched any videos!! I'm sending an email to these members today to ask why, but it's got me really worried. Why sign up and then not use it at all?
At this stage the marketing approach is to laser target to meet a specific need (first one stress relief), to offer free membership and later when I have built a small community on the site and facebook page to launch the premium membership.
I'm wondering though if offering full access to the whole library for a couple of months to build community, then closing most of it off to paid members only later on, could be a better marketing approach. That is what I did with my first membership site and it worked very well. With this new site the video hosting costs me $$ each time someone watches a video, so this could get expensive.
With advertising costs the premium membership would need to be about $20 per month to be viable. Any less than this and obtaining a new member with advertising (and I'm thinking advertising in Natural News' email newsletter to start) would cost more than would be recieved.
I'm also wondering if the membership model is the best one for this idea. Perhaps I should be offering all videos in the library for download? Perhaps I should be offering a download charge of 99cents each? Although at a low rate like that again with advertising costs I don't know if it would be viable. I like the membership model because it offers recurring monthly income and I've used this idea on a couple of other sites very successfully.
One reason why the videos in the premium membership area are offered online is so that they can be continually "looped" and you can choose one to play and go to sleep to or keep it running in the background. The video host provider I use formats the videos so they can be played on any and all devices. The video length of anywhere from just over 4 minutes to up to 20 minutes. With the format this offers enough variety in the scene for looping to not seem repetitive.
So with that background information here are my specific questions:
1. Does this look like a viable business idea to you? Is this a product that you think people would want?
2. Membership model or sell download for each video model? Which is better?
3. If a membership model could work, should I open the video library up totally for free for a couple of months first?
I thank you all in advance for taking the time to help me. So far I've poured thousands of dollars into this business idea; camera and mic equipment, some travel in NZ to do filming of some of the best spots. Before I pay someone to build an app for me I need to check that this is a good idea!!
