A number of years ago, my wife worked as a book keeper for a gentleman that owned no less than 8 different companies. Each month she balanced the check books for each business and his personal accounts. One day while she worked this gentleman and I started talking so I asked him how I needed to do to be like him. He told me many things, most of which I have since forgot, but one thing stayed with me. He told me to "stop doing poor people things and start doing rich people things". I have spent alot of time thinking about this and here is what I have decided.
1. Poor people make excuses and rich people accept the blame for their mistakes. While poor people try to place blame for their problems on other people, rich people try to learn from their mistakes. They study what happened, gain an understanding of were they made the mistake and then try to avoid them in the future.
2. Poor people don't plan for the future while rich people make plans and goals for the future. Poor people live day to day, paycheck to paycheck seldom taking the time to think about what they want or how they will get it. Rich people will spend a lot of time thinking and discovering what is important to them. They then make plans and goals that will help them get what they want.
3. Poor people want hand outs or get rich quick schemes. Rich people realize that there is no free lunch. It is only through hard work and constantly striving for your goals that success is attained.
4. Poor people don't budget, rich people live by budgets. Rich set budgets, follow them, and then if necessary revise their budget.
5. Poor people want their stuff now and don't want to wait for it. Rich people now the value of delayed gratification and they are willing to follow it.
6. Poor people want the hand out that they think they are entitled to. Rich people know that there is no free lunch. They know that it is only through hard work and constantly striving for your goals that we progress in life. They also now the value of hard work.
7. Poor people don't keep track of their money, they over spend, pay out the nose for over draft fees or interest. Rich people track every expenditure to avoid the overdraft fees and try to limit the interest they pay. This one can go hand in hand with #4 & #5.
8. Poor people don't understand interest and therefore they pay lots of it. Rich people not only understand interest, they strive to avoid paying it if possible. They work to find ways to make interest their friend. They try to have their money work for them, not the other way around.
Well, I thought I could at least get to 10, but that is all I have for now. I realize that I don't have everything figured out since I have only managed to climb to lower middle class. I also realize that most people on this sight already have this figured out so please feel free to add your thoughts and suggestions.
Hopefully some one can learn from my thoughts and any others all of you can come include.
