Hi there. Newbie here. I've read the TMF so I hope we're on the same page.
Posted this because of my current reality. I'm in need of money just to survive. Right now I'm stuck living with the folks, so I figured I'd get a job. Any Fastlaners care to hire me?
Now some of you may think I'm ridiculous, if so don't bother posting. Spend your time elsewhere. I'm not prepared to jump fully into entrepreneurship. I have my reasons - it's not up for discussion.
For the rest of you looking for an employee, perhaps I can help. I'm based in Victoria, Australia so preferably you Australian Fastlaners are interested. If you're not from here, I might be able to do online work (bit tricky since I share a family computer and can't afford a laptop on my own - yes, I'm that broke).
I have posted elsewhere regarding business approaches and ideas, but I gotta be honest - I'm too much of a wantrepreneur at this point. Secretly I've always wanted to be part of something big, but not be a captain. So I guess I'm straddling the middle ground between faceless employee and daring entrepreneur. All the better for you.
I need money in the near future - not in the sense of getting rich quick but in the sense of being able to support myself without government help or parents. As a young male, it's a huge blow to my basic self-respect by depending on those - being your employee would change everything.
Q. WHAT CAN YOU OFFER ME?
Well, to be blunt, not much. I'm pretty pissed off at this. Looking back, I made treasonous choices and didn't invest in myself. I was dumb enough to assume a uni degree was all that was needed. I've decided to swallow my pride and entitlement mentality and start from square one.
I am in my 20s, I am happy to go the extra mile. I am a right brain fella, so I'm more likely to be useful in areas such as writing, conversing and dealing with people than in places like math and calculations.
I am looking for a career change and am (so to speak) an empty cup. Ideally I'd work for you, learn from you and give back tenfold at least. Plus you get the benefit of training your future manager so you can kick back and enjoy your vacations.
I don't want to sound like a selfish Sidewalker, but I guess this is really me screaming "Give me a chance!" Never underestimate a hungry cat.
I'd like to think that this would go beyond business. Try not to think of me as an expendable employee - rather a potential comrade in your battle for business success.
I can give you my resume. Just ask. It's not much, but I do believe I can offer some value. I'm repenting here. Don't hire me just on my resume - I know it stinks. My attitude and willingness to learn is what really matters.
Here's a blog excerpt so you get my mindset.
"You’ll hear me mock employees time and time again. That’s because most companies treat their employees like dumb cattle and the employees always complain “I hate my job“. Then the employees go back to the same job day in and day out, like cattle at a feed lot.
But there is a big difference between working for a faceless corporation and working for a small business. As a business owner you will have the opportunity to create a great company that people want to work for.
Your job as an employer is threefold: teacher, motivator, check writer.
You aren’t a babysitter or a personal therapist and you should never act like one but there is one easy way you get your employees to be happy, feel like part of the team, and come up with new ideas….
You give them a voice. You listen to them. They are helping to build your company, they want to be a part of something, and they will often have ideas that you would never think of."
Think of me as your prospective apprentice. I'm an empty cup for you to fill your knowledge with.
Q. WHY DON'T YOU GET A DAY JOB AND TRY FASTLANING ON YOUR OWN?
Because in this instance, I can't bring myself to. Most day jobs are a time suck with mediocre work, and more to the point they won't pay enough to even move out without starving. I'm living with Slowlaner/Sidewalker parents - they're too set in their ways to change. Believe me, I've tried to convince them.
This gives you a benefit - if I do manage to move out, I won't be encumbered by surrounding Slowlane psychologies and I can devote more energy and time to helping YOU.
Sound too good to be true? It's not - hire me and you'll see.
It's different if I work for a Fastlaner. You would have a clear vision of your business and presumably would like to confer responsibility on your employees. What I'd really like to do is come for the ride and be part of something great!
Another thing - starting a business is not an overnight thing. It would take at least a year or so to build something profitable (assuming I had a need-based premise). I gotta be honest - I never wanted to go into business. I know some forum members may snicker at my unwillingness, but just as some people like being single and others want relationships, some want to be employees and others are entrepreneurs.
I am who I am - don't bother convincing me otherwise. This is good for you anyway.
I've realised that I don't actually want to be rich - make good money, sure, but not necessarily Fastlane rich.
Q. BUT WHAT IF YOU DECIDE TO DITCH ME AND GO ON YOUR OWN FASTLANE?
That won't happen necessarily. I'm a very loyal guy and I don't like to bite the hand that feeds me. If you are concerned about this, you can discuss franchising or offering an ownership stake down the track. But that's up to you. I'm in no position now to demand anything close to that.
The ideal scenario is that I eventually become your right hand man. What I crave is the chance to learn and provide value. I'm well aware that I will need to prove myself to you, so I am willing to work for a probationary period (ideally a month). But don't shortchange me - I don't expect a high salary, but I do expect a reasonable amount of pay if you like me. Treat me with respect and I will pay you back enormously.
The other thing to note is that I've read TMF . Which means I can also hopefully assist in growing your performance. Most employees are mercenary in nature and only care about the pay check. What I care about is having a meaningful job and being part of something awesome, along with being paid well.
Sorta like the Dustin Moskovitz to your Mark Zuckerberg. Or the Rick Rubin to your Russell Simmons. Or the Jacinta Caithness to your Janine Allis.
If you want to talk more - you can email me at XXXXXXXX - I'm open to working in any industry as long as I have an opportunity to provide value and am not treated like some coffee machine or shelf stacker (don't get me wrong - I'll do those things if it's part of the job, but don't make it my whole job). Employees are people too.
Hope to hear from you.
Ken.
