I’m looking for some feedback on a business idea that’s been on my mind. By trade, I’m a programmer, but I’ve recently developed a strong interest in marketing. I’ve been learning a lot about it, and it’s becoming increasingly clear to me that understanding marketing and customer acquisition might be even more valuable than programming itself, like building websites or apps.
My father runs a large company specializing in mobile crane rentals. It’s been around for 25 years, has an impressive fleet and great potential, but its online presence is almost nonexistent. Their website is outdated, their SEO ranking is poor, and, to make things worse, the current site admin was charging hefty fees for ads that were never actually run. Most of their business comes from word-of-mouth or repeat customers.
My father often complains that smaller companies are taking clients away from them and later subcontracting back to his company for larger projects, which cuts into their potential earnings.
Here’s my idea: I want to use my marketing and programming skills to revamp their online presence. This includes creating a new, professional website with case studies and updates, improving their visibility on search engines, and running ads on Google and Facebook. My goal isn’t just to help my father’s company grow but to turn this into a springboard for my own business. I’d position myself as a marketing agency that helps large companies in construction and industrial sectors establish and optimize their online presence.
With such a significant first client as my father’s company, I could aim to attract other major players in the market, offering comprehensive services like web development, ad management, and maybe even performance-based pricing (a percentage of additional profits generated through my efforts).
What do you think about this direction? Are there challenges I might not be seeing? Any advice would be much appreciated!
