About a year ago, I needed to find another freelance gig, and I was facing a choice: learn another tech (Kubernetes) or learn marketing. There was a lot of demand for Kubernetes, and I figured that if I had experience working with it, I could get those gigs listing it. But, from "The Millionaire Fastlane ", I knew that marketing helps you to stand out from competition. And those Kubernetes gigs had lots of people applying for them, so I'd have to stand out to get those gigs, even if I had Kubernetes experience.
I chose to rewrite my marketing message from a generic one to one saying I can reduce bug rate in their app. I'm guessing that serves as a proxy for showing I'm reliable and do good work.
And, I signed up a new client that paid 2x of what my stable client was paying me
Now, freelancing isn't a Fastlane business, but marketing is a skill that can be used to build one. I'm going through a course on leads, and I'm thinking of asking the client I had signed up for a referral. The higher my rate, the less hours I have to work, and the more hours I can dedicate to entrepreneurship.
I feel that I'm at the point, where I can practice "It looks like work to them, but it feels like play to me. And that's how I know noone can compete with me on it. Because I'm just playing 16 hours a day.". Meaning, I'm able to obsess with my skills and interests, and build a product, instead of refreshing YouTube feed.
