Hi everyone,
I just finished reading The Millionaire Fast Lane, found this forum and wow, I just wish I found this sooner.
My wife and I have been trying to escape the rat race for 2 years now. We are both stuck in jobs we don't like, bored out of our minds and working hard on the side for that day we can finally say the words: time to live.
We started in 2017, after having a full breakdown about our lives. "Is this all there is to life? Working hard for others and trying to climb the corporate ladder? For what?" My wife had been laid off a top pharmaceutical company the year before due to their department being moved to a low paying country. All this work for what?
We started trying to find our passion in life. What are we meant to do in this world? It surely can't be slave away for 40 hours a week to rest on the weekends. We read about crypto (all the rage at the time), we talked to an acquaintance about the stock market, we looked into index funds.
Crypto was a gamble, we knew about the tulip mania, this was more of the same.
Stock market was impossible, pretty much a full-time job learning about companies, the ups and downs of the market, or having to give all our hard cash to some "manager" somewhere and hope for the best.
Mr Moustache said: retire in 20 years by never going out and cutting coupons while putting money in index funds.
Then we found Rich Dad Poor Dad and that changed our lives. Instead of retiring in 35 years, we would could it in 10-12 years with real estate. Just then and there we thought we had found the "fast lane" to financial independence. Two months later we were already putting down offers on properties.
Fast forward to 1 month ago (we keep "reading" books in audible, we read pretty much everything related to accumulating wealth), my wife found The Millionaire Fastlane and she said "You have to read this, I'm terribly depressed." (Hah)
So I gave it a try and can confirm I got depressed too. So here we are slaving away at a 9-5 job to get to a deposit on a new property so we can get a fixed 10% ROI with a mortgage when people are out there getting 50%-75% ROI, no debt, no ceiling.
We've been working on making our businesses a reality for a while now, I'm a programmer but getting anything off the ground has proven really hard with a full-time job. We work hard every morning, we do 1 hour of work before we go to work, 2 hours in the evenings. We save everything we can and we are still 10 years away from retiring.
Then we found this thread: GOLD! - From 0 To $240,000 Per Year PROFIT In 18 Months and our lives changed again. By our calculations, if we buy a working business and we reorient our efforts, we should be able to retire in the next 3-4 years.
We found the thread on a Wednesday, were going to sign for another property the next Tuesday. How long took us to reorient our goals and go for the business? One weekend. We crunched the numbers and knew just then that betting on the property would get us away from our goals, not closer to them. We are now committed to buy a working business and continue to work as hard as we do to make it work.
