Hey all, this is my first post here since my introduction, so forgive me if this has been discussed before. Being recently out of graduate school and noticing the high unemployment among many recent graduates, I was thinking of the concept of businesses offering 'unpaid internships' to qualified applicants that they could not otherwise afford to pay.
This makes sense on both sides of the coin. For those of us who are starting up businesses and are low on capital, it could provide a motivated labor force because they would be working in exchange for good references when they go onto other jobs. If they perform well, move them up to a paid employee. Perhaps do a 30 day internship cycle. For those near universities, perhaps look into partnering up with the school to offer current students internships while going for their degree.
The pros:
Affordable labor
Many of those likely to join would be motivated to work and learn, as opposed to just collecting a paycheck.
Work experience for many
The cons:
Not receiving a paycheck might have others not work as hard when they see others working the same and getting paid.
For businesses that require a long training period, this might not help.
I am sure many of you have considered this before, but I would like to get some feedback on what you think of this, and if anybody had and successes or failures with interns in this sense.
