At 16 years old I became obsessed with entreprenuership after listening to Ed Mylett, and immediately fell for the "do what you love! pursue your passion!" trap. I started building and flipping used gaming computers and after a couple tries started getting profit, usually $50-$150 each. 70 computers, a wordpress website, and 2 years of dabbling in and out of it later, I realized the returns on my time were dogshit after I read The Millionaire Fastlane . It took way too long to buy the parts, assemble it, put it up for sale, and make videos promoting them if I wanted to sell through the website and not just Facebook Marketplace. Theres a low entry barrier, low need, difficult to scale, and thin margins, pretty much every commandment violated. Reading the other books just kept confirming it.
My new idea I'm currently working is a reel for pool backwash and drain hoses. I clean pools and saw a glaring annoyance with being the guy who has to drain people's pools- the heavy 150ft drain hoses are a pain in the a$$ to roll out and rool up, and there is no hose reel on the market large or durable enough to roll it up with, only small flimsy ones designed for small filter backwash hoses. In fact, most of these "backwash hose reels" are just extension cord reels re-marketed as backwash hose reels and have terrible reviews. For the past few weeks Ive been designing and 3D printing a prototype.
My main concern is need- I really don't know if there's enough need for this product to make CENTS. Obviously my target market would be pool guys- I just don't know if theres enough of them, or if I could even get repeat customers. When the prototype is done I need to test in on the market, I just don't know how I'm gonna get it in front of other pool guy's eyes and get feedback.
Reading some the threads on here literally makes my eyes pop, it's clear to me there are a boatload of people on here much smarter, more successful, and sometimes even younger than me that have figured it out, so really, I would super appreciate any comments, feedback, or advice about this idea!
