I like niche marketplaces. They can get more authority and trust in their market than general marketplaces.
They know what every visitor is interested in.
They can offer more relevant lead magnets that get people onto a more niche email list, for example.
Their ads could do better too. I suspect people searching on Google for anything dog related might be more inclined to click and ad for welovedogs.com vs amazon.com
I personally don't like puhpy.com as a domain either.
I don't think it's ideal when people have to spell out a business or domain name over the phone or on a podcast. Saying that, fiverr, uber, lyfte, yahoo, etc all managed fine.
My preference is easy to spell and less niche. With puhpy, what happens if you find you're selling more to adult dogs, or other animals? Again, it's been done by other businesses (groupon isn't group coupons anymore) so don't get precious about it. It's about execution.
I think Andy has sufficiently answered @Beijing and @StrikingViper69
However, I'll add that bothering whether your product category is offered on either Amazon, ebay or Walmart does nothing for you. These marketplaces all offer products in nearly every category imaginable. Everything from fresh tomatoes to 18-wheeler trucks and mini-houses are bought and sold on there.
The difference between Amazon, ebay and Puhpy is specialization and focus on the needs of only one narrow market segment. Puhpy is a marketplace for dog products. They are marketplaces for everything under the sun.
Also, @Andy Black Puhpy isn't named or intended to be a marketplace specifically for puppies. It's a brand name intended to be "dog-related."
And yes, execution is what actually matters. If two startups give their companies identical names, their outcomes will still be different.
