Hello everyone!
A little bit about myself
I'm Goku (34M) currently living in Australia. I'm a Software Engineer specialising in mobile apps but I also have experience in both web/backend development. I've been coding since middle school and have work experience of over 12 years. Before moving to Australia I've lived in the USA, where I got my CS degree and worked as a mobile developer.
I mostly worked in the fintech where I built apps for banks, insurance companies, and personal finance management tools. Now I work in travel industry.
My journey
I've dreamed of starting my own company as long as I remember. That's why I left the college in my home country in first place and moved to US for better education. In college I made a few attempts to start a start-up but it didn't lead anywhere and I gave up. The full time job was already exhausting and I didn't see value in spending little free time I had on side projects. Never stopped investing in myself and reading though
Fast forward, moved to Australia and had kids, and this time reality hit me differently. I love spending time with my kids. I want to home-school them and travel freely to my home country whenever I want. I want my freedom back and I don't really care about the money, the luxury or anything else other than freedom of time.
A few years back we made another attempt at starting a B2B start-up and made all the beginner mistakes. Spent too much time building a product no-one wanted. To be fair, they did want the product but noone signed the contract when it comes to paying for it. And we decided to stop working on it after 2 years. We learned a lot from it; at bare minimum we learned what not to do.
Before starting anything, I decided to take a break and just read any book I can find about starting a business and invested in myself.
My intro to Fastlane
I'm an avid reader and I first read The Millionaire Fastlane a few years back, after seeing it on Reddit, and I really liked the book. In the meantime, I read a bunch of books about business, start ups, self development, customer, and product. I was also hooked into Paul Graham articles, especially "How to make wealth", "How to get startup ideas", and "How to do great work".
As I kept reading one thing became clear that I was wasting my time by "trying to find ideas", and building small apps to follow my passing for sake of "doing what I love".
Then I came across Unscripted then I loved it! I see it as a practical, dense summary of everything I read so far. Before this book, I read "Give and Take" and I noticed how these books overlap when it comes to creating value and giving to people.
The funny thing is that I see myself as a problem solver and from childhood I would always find myself helping people, and solving their problems; mostly free. I would build websites for small businesses etc. It feels like, along the way, I forgot that and started focusing on chasing money or chasing the coolness of being a startup founder.
What's next?
My goal this year is to execute. No more reading books about starting a business but just executing. Building prototypes, validating, and trying again. I'm in no rush. I know it takes long time and I'm ready for it. I spent 9 years in college, changed majors, changed countries, worked 60+ a week in restaurants while studying so I understand no pain no gain.
The biggest roadblock now is the golden cuffs. A good paying job. I've been saving so hopefully this year I can quit my job and focus on this full-time.
Thanks @MJ DeMarco for two great books (I've been recommending them to my friends) and for the forum!
P.S Feel free to reach out to me for any questions with regards to mobile app development or software in general.
