Am I on the Fast-Lane? Or am I driving a pinto into a ditch?
(This will be a bit long, but quite detailed and probably helpful to others)
What's up guys and gals. First off, if you don't already know my story, you can read my previous thread about my past success in my introduction here: https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/introductions-networking/29863-new-guy.html#post198682
While that was great, it didn't last. As I mentioned in that post, I basically took a hit that led me down a path of the destruction of potential, and lost faith that that previous business would turn into anything more than a six-figure small business. Then I basically went broke from there...long story...but I'm coming back
So to the newest venture (which I actually thought of many years ago).
Over the years, I've tried many different types of businesses online and off. I've done everything from affiliate marketing, to cpa, to software, info, etc. At the same time, I have a natural talent as a music composer and producer who can play multiple instruments.
What I've noticed throughout the years in all of my business ventures, is that while I've made some money with most all of the internet channels, I've always seemed to have the most success with creating my own products as opposed to affiliate or cpa marketing.
The biggest successes I've had have been the creation of music products, info products, or publishing websites that drive massive traffic and monetize through ads (the "product" being the info on the site).
But, the biggest sources of income for me ever since I left my last job in 2005 have had to do with music. I also have a passion for weight training and exercise, trying to build my body to it's highest natural potential.
Well, many years ago during my music career and experiences, I learned the dramatic effects that music has on people, without them even realizing it. This includes people's motivation, excitement, energy, and endurance as it relates to exercise.
This is why aerobics, zumba, etc. are all driven by high energy music. It's why the gym plays this music over the loudspeakers. But, the music played on the speakers at the gym is suitable for cardio and aerobics, not for weightlifting.
What amazed me many years ago as I was in the gym lifting weights, was the fact that 95% of the guys in the back lifting weights had on headphones.
So, apparently they knew the value that music could have on weight training. They also knew that most of the "workout music" on the market was not suitable for them. So they resort to selecting commercial songs that they believe are suitable for their workouts, purchase from iTunes, etc.
So I did more research and found even more facts about the effect music has on the body, and found the scientific reports of music on the body. I also saw all types of forum threads and yahoo answer questions about "what's the best weightlifting music," etc...
Although google doesn't show a million searches a day for this, I figured that the fact that people were asking in bodybuilding forums and on yahoo had to mean there was some type of demand.
I mean hey, Google isn't the end all be all to every single idea is it? If people didn't know such a thing was available, then maybe they wouldn't search for it on google? (Of course, you are free to set me straight if my thinking is off)
So way back in 2006, I bought the domain name, MusicForMuscles.com
The idea was that since music has seemed to be a natural strength for me, and the biggest contribution to my income since 2005, I would try to use everything I learned to create music specifically for those of us who lift weights, so that we would have a "workout music" tailored to us.
Unfortunately, I didn't do anything with it until 2010. Well, 2011 was my first year, and although I haven't made millions of dollars yet, I built a customer base of motivated weightlifters, including some professional athletes.
I've proven that I have something new that people are willing to pay for. My customer base has grown to include pro and amateur bodybuilders, powerlifters, military solders, boxers, mma fighters, martial arts guys, gym facilities, etc.
Now, I have plans to expand and take it to the next level.
I am adding two new channels to the MusicForMuscles brand, so the 3 legs will be:
MusicForMuscles.com (currently live)
MusicForBoxers.com (coming soon)
RunnerJams.com (coming soon)
MusicForMuscles is of course for the bodybuilding/weight training and cross training guys, etc....
You can actually hear samples of songs that I've created so far at:
Weight Lifting Music & Motivational Workout Tools from MusicForMuscles.com | MusicForMuscles.com
I currently have styles that include: cinematic/epic orchestral trailer style music, hip-hop/rap, rock/metal, and songs with varying lifting related chants. Trying to have something for different tastes...
RunnerJams opens me up to the massive market of passionate runners. While there are many "cardio/aerobics" music sites, they typically are dj's remixing commercial songs. But they are not necessarily marketed to runners.
MusicForBoxers zeroes in on fighters who use music during their weight training, sparring, bag hitting, jump rope, etc.
With all of this going on, I am also about to begin recruiting new musicians and bands beside myself to build a massive inventory of songs, and focus on marketing it to the max...
I alone can only make so many songs, at which point I am a single artist, which means only people who enjoy the music that I personally create will be customers.
By adding other musicians, I become the iTunes of the "strength related sports music world" that I am creating, and also can cater to the many different tastes and preferences that people have.
I would provide other musicians a new revenue channel, exposure, and what I believe is a new opportunity for them just as the ringtones industry was for them. Of course I get a percentage for this. So I'd get 100% for my own works, plus a percentage of the works of potentially hundreds or more of others.
In addition, since I've had my music used in television in film, I would begin building my relationships with fight/sports video game creators. I'd work to build MusicForMuscles as the go to music publisher for sports and fighting games, as well as television sports broadcasts and events (think ESPN highlights, UFC events, etc).
This would be an additional opportunity for the musicians who create music for MusicForMuscles.
It will be a lot of work and energy, so I have to ask myself the tough questions before I go further down the rabbit hole...
Am I building a long-term fast-lane business that has the potential to create enough value for enough people to generate significant profits? Or am I just building another full-time self-employment job that will pay six figures for massive work without much leverage?
I have my beliefs. But I also always like to take a step outside of myself, look at the foundational principles from an honest and practical standpoint, and then compare it with my gut.
I mean, why should they buy this "specialized" music when they can just put their favorite regular songs on their iPod? (I have plenty of reasons why explained on the website, but just relaying my thought process here that I use to come up with usp, etc.)
For it to work, I'd have to create a movement where people feel like they are a part of something significant. It's not just "music," it's a lifestyle, a tribe, a "brotherhood" if you will.
Side-note:
I currently have over 6,200 titter followers (yes I called it "titter")
and almost 1,100 "likes" on facebook
As my slogan says, "Make Your NEXT Workout Your BEST Workout!"
That's what it is about, making your next your best, not only in the gym, but outside the gym as well, in your confidence, career, business, income, ability to be the best and healthiest father, husband, leader, etc.
Yes, the music alone uses the scientific principles that will help you have better workouts. But everything else that the "movement" stands for also feeds your own internal desire and motivation to push yourself harder in the gym, and in all the other important areas of life.
These are just some of the principles, and my mission statement. I have the desire to use my gifts to help many people have all of these things.
But, the next major question that I have to think about is...
Scalability...
Is the "pond" big enough, or can it be made big enough to be considered fast-lane?
See, the thing is, it would pretty much depend on volume since music download sales are a small transaction on a per song basis. Even still, the average customer purchases multiple songs at a time, and comes back on a regular basis to purchase new songs.
Also, when I had the song inventory, I'd add a monthly membership piece where customers could pay a monthly fee to get a certain number of songs per month.
So with it being low transaction costs per song (although some tickets are as high as $50 for a single purchase of multiple songs), I have to take into account the volume requirements, and payouts for other artists contributing music, etc.
General music publishers make massive amounts of money. What I am basically doing is targeting a specific and passionate segment that isn't being served and giving them a great service.
My goal is to provide a great product that actually helps people get the result they are after, and I believe I have done that so far based on the hundreds of emails and Facebook and Youtube testimonials that I have received.
The question always looms, is the segment large enough, passionate enough, and can they be rallied into a movement that buys and tells the world about the benefits they have received?
Just to clarify: This isn't something where I'm in the "thinking stage." I'm already doing it and have paying customers who love it and are sending testimonials every week. I'm just thinking trying to think about how far I can take it, and if it's full of big potential, or just a little side business.
Feel free to share your thoughts on the questions I've introduced. Hope this helps someone else as well
