This is something I have been thinking about for a few days now. I spent 22 years in manufacturing on the shop floor. I watching the machining industry go from manual machines to CNC (computer numerical controlled) machines. I watched rookie engineers on the shop floor measure and quantify everything. I watched experienced machinists lose their jobs through attrition due to not being needed anymore. These machines were so good that the machines could capture how you created a part and keep that knowledge for future reference. The owners were able to use a craftmans level knowledge, capture it, and transfer it to a less skilled machinist. Basically the industry became far more efficient. Result was far more product with far less personnel.
Today we seem to have a national housing surplus. Result is lower employment. I see China may be facing a housing glut as well. Less need for construction people.
Overall, as a people, I see that we are becoming far more efficient at filling needs. Bringing new things to market happens quick. Clones pop up almost instantly. The new market is quickly flooded and the attention moves on to the next opportunity.
So here is the question, are we as a species becoming too efficient? Is this efficiency causes booms and busts? Am I just full of hot air?
