For years, we've had a number of people post
questions along the lines of "Is college worth it?
It seems like a waste of time!"
The same question comes up, in different forms.
All are along the same lines:
"Is ______________ worth it?
It seems like a waste of time."
Reminds me of a great story about an
old man at a filling station.
Guy speeds in driving a VW bug,
screeches to a stop, and hops out to pump gas.
Old guys totters out and says,
"Here, let me give you a hand with that",
taking the pump handle, flips the guy's
filler lid, and starts pumping.
As he's cleaning the guy's windshield,
the man asks the driver, "Where you headed?"
The driver shrugs "Not really sure.
Looking for a new place to live.
What's it like around here?"
The old man stops cleaning and
thinks about this: "What was it like
where you came from?"
The young driver shakes his head,
scowling: "Was dog eat dog.
Couldn't trust anybody--
they were all out to screw you.
I hated it, and had to leave."
The old man cracks a grin and
nods, knowingly: "Yep, it's kinda
like that around here, too".
The young man looks startled,
and says, "Wow, thanks for being
honest old man. You saved me
from making a big mistake!"
The old man finishes up, and
takes the guy's money, smiling.
"Happy to help", he says, as the guy speeds off.
A few minutes later a young kid
comes putting up in an old VW bug.
He hops out to get some gas.
Old guys totters out and says,
"Here, let me give you a hand with that",
taking the pump handle, flips the guy's
filler lid, and starts pumping.
As he's cleaning the kid's windshield,
the old man asks,
"Where you headed?"
The kid shrugs "Not really sure.
Looking for a nice place to live.
What's it like around here?"
The old man stops cleaning
and thinks about this:
"What was it like
where you came from?"
The young driver smiles:
"It was a great place. Everyone helped
out everyone else, and had your back.
I never locked my doors, and had
friends over almost every night.
I'm really going to miss them."
The old man cracked a grin
and nodded, knowingly:
"Yep, it's kinda like that
around here, too".
The kid looks startled, and says,
"Really? Wow-- that's great!"
Looking around, the kid says,
"Maybe I'll stop here for a while.
Seems like a real nice place."
"It is" says the old man, smiling broadly.
"You've just got to be the
right kinda person to appreciate it."

College is like that:
It's not grade school anymore.
No one is MAKING you go to class.
It's all up to you what you get out of it.
If you think it's a waste of time, well, then it is.
And if you think it's a place
where you can learn amazing things
and meet people that
you'll learn from
for the rest of your life,
well, then that's what it is.
You've just got to be the right
kind of person to appreciate it. :smxF:
